Varvatos In H-Town
Ace menswear designer John Varvatos rocks out with Houston fans at book signing party
What: John Varvatos book signing and cocktails.
Where: John Varvatos boutique in The Galleria.
The 411: The noted menswear designer and avid music lover jetted to Houston for a quick trip to check out his store, meet customers and sign copies of his book, Rock in Fashion.
"I don't always love big parties that are overblown," he said. "I like smaller ones where I can talk with everyone in the store."
Afterwards he dined with a select group at Armandos.
Earlier in the day, Varvatos talked about his book, which includes more than 250 images, including never-before-seen photographs of artists from Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones to Jack White and Kings of Leon, along with passages from his personal style notebook to reveal his perspective on how musicians' evolving styles impact fashion and pop culture.
He divided the book into 20 chapters, covering everything from "hair to scarves to shoes and sneakers, coats, tailoring," he explained.
"Ever chapter has a theme to it — shoes from the New York Dolls wearing women's shoes to the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix wearing the Beatle boots to cowboy boots and what they meant to rock and roll at the time to sneakers —that happens to be one of my Converse (sneakers) that Green Day performed in," he said, while thumbing through the book.
"Here's a section on second skin leather — all the kinds of things that make me think of leather over time, photos of The Who, a Detroit band called the Romantics,The Sex Pistols, Clash.
"It turned out to be a much bigger project but actually a very fulfilling one in the end. It was fun."
