Neon Persian rugs? Believe it — it's all part of catering to younger, hipper home owners
Even dealers of fine Persian carpets are feeling the pressure to keep up with the changing tastes of a youthful clientele. Just ask Sam Abraham, proprietor of Abraham's Oriental Rugs.
With a desire for a more contemporary look, clients have inspired Abraham to offer over-dyed antique Persian rugs. He selects Kashan rugs, circa 1880, typically woven in pale colors, and has the color removed at workshops in Turkey and then "over dyed" in brilliant, eclectic colors that some would describe as neon. Costs range from $5,000 to $15,000.
In his showroom at the Decorative Center Houston, carpets in bright bold blue and a dazzling magenta welcome guests.
Abraham says that you can see several of these contemporary style antique rugs in the new Dress for Success headquarters and in the lobby of the BBVA Compass Bank in River Oaks.
