    Deuce Designs

Fashionable Texans player debuts collection featuring "Happy Socks" and cool caps

    Marcy de Luna
    Oct 10, 2016 | 11:10 am

Houston Texans cornerback Charles James II is taking on the fashion world — one step at a time.

James, who made a splash on the small screen in HBO's Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Houston Texans, struck a chord with fans for his heartfelt effort at making the team — he was released and went to Baltimore, but ended up back with the Texans — and also for his snazzy fashion sense. The colorful socks he donned during training camp have become a trademark, even earning the 26-year-old the nickname, “Happy Socks.”

And now fans can be part of James's style game with his Deuce Designs. Available solely at the Go Texan Store at NRG Stadium, the collection features six caps along with coordinating sock designs, each sold separately.

At a recent press conference, James, who was joined at the podium by fellow Houston Texans' players cornerback A.J. Bouye, cornerback Charles James, safety Andre Hal, and cornerback Robert Nelson, who all modeled accessories by Deuce Designs, beamed as he talked about his collection. “It's really special to be able to do something like this. I just love how everything turned out,“ he said.

And while he’s proud of the every piece, James cites a cap with a white brim and soft black leather upper featuring a bold red Texans logo as his favorite item. “This is the one I’m going to sport anywhere, everywhere, any event... When I’m out, when I’m not out, when I’m in, when I’m asleep,” he said. “Anywhere, I’m sporting it.”

The rest of the eye-catching collection boasts bold color combinations of red, white and blue, plus an all-white pairing and an all-purple set. “I’m especially excited about the purple hat and socks. I did that mainly for the females — to have them involved and let them know that I didn’t forget about them. I’m kind of thinking about sporting them against Minnesota," he said last week. "Even though it’s their colors, it’s still Go Texans"

Alas, the socks weren't so happy as the Vikings trounced the Texans 31-13 in Minnesota on Sunday.

James' Deuce Designs is the third Player Inspired line from the Houston Texans, following NUK Designs & Apparel by DeAndre Hopkins in 2015 and Fly Guy by Kareem Jackson in 2014.

"I've come a long way," James said. "It's special. Just to come this far and be able to do something like this, it's special. It just shows how far you can get in life if you just believe and trust in God's plan. Just keep going as a human being and as a person."

Deuce Designs by Charles James II is available now at the Go Texan store at NRG Stadium.

Houston’s premier boys-only boutique now has a permanent home in Rice Village. ParkerJoe, which offers clothing, accessories, and lifestyle brands that takes lads from wee tykes to pre-adolescent (in sizes newborn to 16), originally opened last year in a temporary spot in the River Oaks Shopping Center.

Now open at 5515 Kelvin Dr., Suite 95, the store unfolds across 1,900 square feet, all of it stocked with the retailer’s carefully curated inventory that embraces all kinds of boys and all types of occasions. Families will find looks that range from formal and preppy to sporty and casual, with brands such as Bailey Boys, Classic Prep, Saltwater Boys, and Appaman as well as local brands like Sunnies, which specializes in polarized sunglasses for children, and onesies from Houston children’s apparel purveyor Oink Moo.

“We wanted to create a place where boys are seen and heard,” said Lisa Hostler, who owns the store with her daughter Chelsea. “Their needs and their wants are represented at ParkerJoe.”

Hostler is excited to be in the Rice Village spot, an affluent area known for its walkability and attractiveness for families, which make it an ideal location for a niche retailer like ParkerJoe.

“It’s a younger population and a strong retail mix,” she said. “We couldn’t be happier here in a center that has welcomed us so warmly and made us feel at home.”

The store itself is designed to help boys enjoy the sometimes awkward process of shopping for new clothes. Towards that end, they are welcome to touch and play with toys on the shelves, which are stocked with books, games, and stuffed animals.

An official grand opening is planned for September, but prior to that customers can expect a summer of events including trunk shows, a fashion show, and an influencer brunch.

Even as Lisa and Chelsea are excited to be in Rice Village, they are setting their sights on continued expansion. They currently have a temporary outpost in Memorial City Mall, and are looking for retail locations in other Houston neighborhoods, with a desire to open across Texas.

ParkerJoe in Rice Village is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
