    New Patio Restaurants

Houston's best new patios: 10 restaurants made for enjoying the great outdoors (at last!)

    Eric Sandler
    Oct 7, 2014 | 11:22 am

Last weekend's low humidity and mild temperatures saw Houstonians flocking to restaurant patios to soak up a little sun with their meals. The return of patio weather feels like a gift from Mother Nature after the summer's punishing heat and humidity makes any attempt at outdoor dining a strictly late-night affair.

While places like Batanga, Backstreet Cafe and Beaver's are all can't-miss classics, CultureMap's savvy readers demand to know the newest, freshest spots. Even newish favorites like Caracol or Coltivare's 3,000 square-foot garden might not be current enough. Consider the 10 all-new options below as a place to get started.

    Pax Americana

Pax may be Houston's hottest restaurant — Adam Dorris's locally sourced, constantly evolving menu is attracting diners from all over the city. However, the noise level when the small space fills can make conversation impossible. While restaurateur Shepard Ross has promised some sound deadening is on the way, Pax's patio looms as a potentially peaceful alternative, even amid the sounds of traffic from Montrose. Besides, Dorris's chunky beef tartare, red oak salad with Taleggio panna cotta and Gulf shrimp will taste even better with the wind in your hair.

    Bistro Menil

The newly opened restaurant on the Menil campus features a 40-seat patio set far enough away from West Alabama that traffic from the busy street is only a faint murmur. It's a lovely spot to try one of chef Greg Martin's globally-inspired pizzas and enjoy a carafe of wine from the many cask selections. Of course, the bistro's liquor license allows them to sell beer and wine to go, which means the sprawling Menil lawn is also an outdoor seating option. Ask about borrowing a picnic basket.

Museum Park Cafe/Bosta Wine & Coffee

Museum Park Cafe, Justin Basye's new upscale neighborhood restaurant in the recently opened Parc Binz building, features well-executed American fare made with rigorously sourced ingredients. Despite being a route to several Museum District destinations, Binz is quiet enough that sitting near won't ruin a meal.

If roast fluke or beet salad seem a little delicate for outdoor dining, Basye's blue label burger, a high-quality riff on New York restaurant Minetta Tavern's famous black label burger, makes for a perfect patio meal. Even when Museum Park isn't open, neighboring wine and coffee bar Bosta is open from 7 a.m. to midnight everyday, so it's practically always available.

    Bernie's Burger Bus

Speaking of burgers, the Bellaire brick-and-mortar outpost of the popular food truck serves some of Houston's best. As chef/owner Justin Turner predicted, serving his food on a plate, rather than in a bag, does make it taste better. The patio at Bernie's is covered and has fans, so it's easy to mitigate a sudden spike in temperatures.

Still need to cool down? Try a milkshake (sadly, no longer available with alcohol) or a locally-brewed craft beer.

    La Bikina

This newcomer brings authentic, homestyle Mexican cuisine to The Woodlands. Pork dishes are can't miss, and, of course, the margaritas deliver an appropriate mix of sweet, tart and boozy. A restaurant named for a popular song has to deliver on entertainment, and the patio is no exception. Although it was still a bit of a work in progress on my visit, the restaurant plans to have trained songbirds entertain diners. That might even make it worth the drive from points farther south.

    Revelry on Richmond

Montrose's newest sports bar features a solid selection of craft beer and bar bites that offer a bit of a twist on traditional pub grub. More importantly for this list, Revelry features two patios, one front and one rear, that maximize outdoor seating possibilities. With football season in full swing, the bar also provides enough TVs to catch as many games as possible.

    Lillo & Ella

Kevin Naderi's Asian-fusion restaurant takes the inherent patio goodness of the former El Gran Malo in Lazybrook/Timbergrove spaces and improves upon it with brighter colors, more comfortable seating and a more diverse menu. With a broad selection of shared plates available, the patio is an ideal destination for a group of friends who want to catch up over a couple of beers or a cocktail.

    The Bird House

Technically, the "patio" at this fried chicken pop-up from the food truck masterminds at H-Town StrEATs in the Heights is really just a few picnic tables in front of a space designed to be take-out and drive-thru only. However fried chicken's status as ideal picnic food and the overwhelming deliciousness of chefs Jason Hill and Matt Opaleski's real vegetable sides makes it a great spot to meet up with friends for an afternoon meal. Besides, the price break comes with eight ($25) and 16 piece ($50) orders that come with sides and biscuits.

    Red Ox Bar & Grill

The spirit of Montrose favorite Bocados lives on at this near Northside Tex-Mex and burger joint. Owners Terry Flores and Lily Hernandez have kept customer favorites like fajitas while adding a few new burgers and other entrees. The patio is covered, and a roll-up garage door helps make the entire dining room an al fresco experience. Try it on Wednesday, when Hernandez takes to the grill for steak night.

    Pico's Mex-Mex

Relocating to Upper Kirby has been a boon for the 30-year old Mexican restaurant, which has seen packed since its March opening. In addition to a more upscale interior, the expanded features two covered patios. One runs along the dining room and would make an ideal spot to sip margaritas and linger over Sunday brunch. The other, located next to the bar, provides a look on the busy Richmond/Kirby intersection. Downing Street refugees take note — the bar patio is cigar friendly.

    Honorable Mention: Julep

Consider Julep a more focused take on the recent trend of bars that serve good food. Chef Adam Garcia's plates of cold seafood and fried snacks are unlikely to serve as a meal, but they do provide a pleasant companion to the bar's Southern-inspired cocktail menu. Set away from Washington Ave, the patio provides a quieter, less crowded refuge from the frequently packed interior. Of course, with the weather improving, finding a seat on the patio may become harder than finding one at the bar.

Enjoy a speck and ricotta tartine on the patio at Bosta Wine & Coffee.

For this year’s CultureMap Tastemaker Awards, we’ve shifted our dessert-focused award from Pastry Chef of the Year to Dessert Program of the Year.

It’s a subtle but important change that recognizes that cooking is a team sport. Yes, a great pastry chef may guide a restaurant’s desserts, but it takes dedicated cooks to execute them consistently day-in and day-out. In addition, it allows us to recognize some of our favorite pop-ups along with our favorite restaurants. To be clear, we’re taking a maximal view of “pastry” that includes savory items, breads, pies, cakes, and anything else that makes life a little sweeter or more satisfying.

Which restaurant will win? Find out April 16 at the Tastemaker Awards party at Silver Street Studios. We’ll dine on bites from this year’s nominated restaurants and sip cocktails from our sponsors before revealing the winners in our short and sweet ceremony.

Buy your tickets now before they sell out.

Here are the 11 nominees for Dessert Program of the Year:

    Barbacana
Much like its savory menu, Barbacana pastry chef Priscilla Treviño uses locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients for many of her desserts. Even more notably, she hosts regular dessert collaboration meals with many of the city’s top talents, including Kripa Shenoy (EaDough), Alyssa Dole, and Micaela Victoria (formerly of Goodnight Hospitality). These one-night-only affairs lure diners with the opportunity to sample never-seen creations.

    Blacksmith
Since 2013, the Montrose coffee shop has always taken its food as seriously as its espresso. Under the direction of pastry chef Christina Au, the shop serves an array of muffins, cakes, cookies, and its signature square biscuits. Weekends and holidays are when the stop really shines, which specials, pies, and other destination-worthy delights.

    Bludorn Hospitality
Part of what makes the company’s four restaurants so special is that each one has a signature dessert. Under the direction of corporate pastry chef Marie Riddle, diners know that no meal at Bludorn is complete without its signature baked Alaska, and a trip to Navy Blue has to end with carrot cake, key lime pie, or, ideally, both. No visit to Bar Bludorn is complete without the Martellus (devil’s food cake with salted caramel), and you haven’t really been to Perseid unless an eclair or beignets.

    EaDough
Located in EaDo, this bakery and coffee shop serves up a wide array of sweet and savory pastries, including croissants, muffins, cookies, and more. Pastry chef Kripa Shenoy pays homage to her Indian heritage butter chicken kolache. Seasonal specials bring extra energy to the menu.

    Fluff Bake Bar
For 15 years, pastry chef Rebecca Masson and her team have satisfied Houston’s sweet tooth with signature items like the Veruca Salt cake, Couch Potato cookie, and the Star Crossed Lover (Rice Krispie treat topped with caramel, chocolate, and sea salt). Her Saturday morning bake sales have become a right of passage for chefs from Houston and beyond, drawing everyone from Top Chef judge Gail Simmons to Ernest Servantes, pitmaster and owner of Texas Monthly’s No. 1 barbecue joint, Burnt Bean Co. in Seguin.

    Jane and the Lion Bakehouse
Having already established her reputation at farmers markets across the Houston area, chef Jane Wild took the next step by opening her brick-and-mortar cafe and bakery in the Heights last year. Market favorites like the salted honey pie and stuffed biscuits are, of course, present and accounted for, but having more room has benefits. Wild and her team are baking more sourdough — leading to first rate sandwiches — are even offer plenty of gluten-free options.

    Koffeteria
Having earned both local and national acclaim — including a spot on the New York Times’ list of America’s best bakeries — chef Vanarin Kuch’s EaDo outpost has firmly established its reputation as one of Houston’s most creative pastry producers. New classics like the pholache and baklava croissant helped build the acclaim, as do rotating specials that nod to Kuch’s Cambodian heritage. A second location in West Houston that opened last year means more people than ever are enjoying Kuch’s creations.

    Luciana's Pastry and Coffee
After introducing herself to Houstonians at the short-lived, critically-acclaimed Cafe Louie and through her La Crumb pop-ups, pastry chef Lucianna Emiliani has established a weekend pop-up in the Heights. The permanent (for now) location has allowed Emiliani to turn out signatures like strawberry rolls, coffee cake, and tiramisu, alongside a regular stream of specials that showcase seasonal ingredients — or whatever she happens to be excited about that day.

    Mayahuel
Once named Latin America’s best pastry chef by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, chef Luis Robledo Richards brings serious culinary firepower to his modern Mexican restaurant in Autry Park. The desserts live up to the chef’s lofty reputation. Built around one of three ingredients — vanilla, cacao, or a seasonal item — each composed plate contains multiple components that show off different aspects of the ingredient.

    Sweet Bee Bakehouse
Pick a single best croissant in a city as big as Houston is essentially impossible, but any list of top options would have to include the viennoiserie turned out by pastry chef Ally Barrera. Crispy, light, buttery (of course), and flaky, their delicate crumb demonstrates the care that goes into making them. With a new brick and-mortar that just opened in Pearland, Barrera’s creations will be more available that ever before.

    The Bake Happening
Known for her elaborately decorated cakes, baker Andrea De Gortari has facilitated celebrations Houstonian’s celebrations for several years. She earned national acclaim in 2023 by winning season six of Food Network’s Christmas Cookie Challenge. Those who want to sample her wares without committing to a cake will find De Gortari popping up at festivals and markets around town, especially those that are in line with her progressive values.

The Tastemaker Awards ceremony is sponsored in Houston by Maker's Mark, Culinary Khancepts, Herradura Tequila, Ritual Zero Proof + Seedlip, Shutto, NXT LVL EVENT, and more to be announced. A portion of proceeds will benefit our nonprofit partner, the Southern Smoke Foundation.
