    where to shop

Where to shop in Houston right now: 8 spots to fall for in October

    Julia Davila
    Oct 4, 2019 | 9:05 am

Autumn is here and while the weather may be cooling, the shopping in Houston is positively hot. Look for hip exercise apparel, natural skincare lines, local-made luxe handbags (designed just in time for opera season), and the new brand in town worn by Michelle Obama and Megan Markle.

    Accel Lifestyle
“The first ethical activewear brand for people who sweat and want to smell fresh” is partnering with The Rose, a leading breast health care nonprofit providing accessible screening, diagnostics, and treatment services. Throughout the month of October, Accel Lifestyle is donating a portion of the proceeds from their “Accelerate The Cure” antibacterial tees and tanks.

Available for both men and women, the limited-release tees and tanks are made from Prema fabric, developed by Founder, CEO, and creative chemist, Megan Eddings, with antibacterial properties “making it ideal clothing for cancer patients undergoing treatment.”

    David Peck
Last month, the ready-to-wear designer announced a new partnership with Susan G. Komen Houston with two limited-edition accessories for the 2019 Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Embellished with the French phrase, “Je suis femme,” or, “I am woman,” the lucite box clutch ($195) and canvas pouch ($85) are now available online and at select Houston retailers. For every two lucite box clutches or five canvas pouches sold, Komen Houston can provide a mammogram for uninsured and underinsured women.

Peck also released a collection of bespoke handbags for the Houston Grand Opera 2019-2020 season. With seven main stage productions debuting in Houston, each clutch is inspired by one of the operas. Peck is donating 20 percent of sales to HGO youth education programs and services.

    Kendra Scott
Through October 31, Kendra Scott is donating 20 percent of sales from her limited-edition collection, benefiting Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This year’s Limited-Edition Collection features two variations of drop earrings, a friendship bracelet, and a pendant necklace in blush dichroic glass. For each item sold, Scott and her team will gift a piece of rose quartz jewelry to women affected by cancer.

Additionally, Scott will host the annual “Holley Day” in honor of her late friend Holley Rothell Kitchen. On October 13, the nationwide, in-store event will donate 20 percent of all purchases to Inheritance of Hope.

    Naked Natural
“Our skin is our largest organ, and what [products] we’re putting on, topically, is seeping in and affecting us internally,” Jordan Meadows of Naked Natural tells CultureMap. Aside from offering natural beauty and skincare products, Naked Natural, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month, also offers succulents and home goods, clothing, and jewelry from a husband and wife duo who repurposes wood from trees that didn’t make it after Hurricane Harvey.

Meadows and her two sisters recently opened a DIY station within the boutique for Houstonians to create their own facial oil and toner.

    Nour De La Garza
The womenswear label took time off to reinvent the classics – think: blazers, suits, and pearls. Designed for the young professional who seeks timeless cuts, breathable fabrics, swimwear year-round, and unique accessories to “give any outfit a sophisticated boost at a great price.” Now offering extended sizing (XS-XXL), NDLG is one to watch.

The Hive – A Pop Up Collective
Founded by two small business owners behind My Sweet Cannella, a Latina-owned gift and apparel brand, and Glamour Gypsies, a women’s clothing and accessory brand, The Hive is now open in River Oaks Shopping Center at 2020 W. Gray St. Shop an assortment of local businesses for jewelry, accessories, personalized gifts, women’s, and children’s apparel.

    Veronica Beard
The ready-to-wear brand recently opened its second Texas boutique in River Oaks District. Known for its feminine tailoring and worn by the likes of Michelle Obama and Megan Markle, Houstonians can shop the label’s signature Dickey jacket in tailored tweed, leopard haircalf loafers, and flattering stretch denim with a contrasting tuxedo stripe.

    Vikari Boutique
The fashion retailer, with French roots, has expanded and renovated its River Oaks Shopping Center location. Doubling in size, the boutique continues to offer women’s clothing and accessories and has added a curated selection of home goods from French and Milan-based labels.

Houston bootmaker, Republic Boot Company, turns gator hunts into a custom pair of boots.

In Houston, where custom boots are a source of great pride and style, one local brand is taking the bespoke boot experience to a new level. Republic Boot Company, known for its elevated, hand-crafted creations, just launched a Gator Hunt Experiencewhere customers can source an alligator hide, which will be transformed into a pair of cowboy boots.

Part adventure and part traditional craftsmanship, the experience begins with a hunt in the marshlands near Anahuac, about an hour from Houston, and ends with a custom-made pair of alligator-skin cowboy boots tailored to the client's vision by a Republic Boot Company boot specialist.

"At Republic Boot Company, we pride ourselves on crafting boots that are not just footwear, but a legacy," said Chris Conrad, owner of Republic Boot Company. "This new Gator Hunt Experience takes that commitment to personalization to an unprecedented level, offering our customers a unique and memorable journey taking them from the bayou to the heart of the Bayou City."

The gator hunt is $5,000 per person and includes an 8.5-foot alligator (larger alligators incur extra costs). Individuals of all experience levels can participate, and all necessary permits and equipment are provided to ensure a safe adventure. After the hunt, the hide will be tanned during an eight-month process to ensure a one-of-a-kind pair of boots. Just in case the kicks aren't enough of a conversation starter, participants will also receive a professional mount of the alligator head.

Alligator hunting season runs from September 11 to September 30, so the boots won't be ready for the 2026 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Once they are complete, however, they will be wearable pieces of art with a memorable story behind them. Those interested in extending their only-in-Texas half-day hunt into an overnight experience can book overnight accommodations through Republic Boot Company.
