To bring attention to the upcoming 17th annual Bad Pants Open golf tournament, a team of nurses at Texas Children's Hospital Newborn Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit acted like Project Runway contestants in a competition to see who could make the best "bad" scrubs.
And, boy, were they bad.
KTRK's Casey Curry, FOX 26's Melissa Wilson and I had the fun task of judging the competition, which took place at Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, and, it turns out everyone was a winner in their bad pants. Among our favorites were Jae Hernandez's scrubs dotted with candy corn, Lekeithia Francis' scrubs covered with lifesavers (because that's what she is) and a team of four nurses in outrageous golf attire that would put Bill Murray and the guys from Caddyshack to shame.
Also dressing for the occasion were the Newborn Center's most famous graduates, the Perkins sextuplets, in bad pants that their mother, Lauren, designed and made. The toddlers were celebrating their two-year anniversary of arriving home after their long stay in the hospital's NICU unit.
Amanda and Ben Copp, along with daughter, Cami, also dressed for occasion in flame-emblazoned pants.In a serious moment, the Copps recalled tense times when Cami was born three months early, but thanks to the good care during her 86-day stay in the NICU unit, she is now a thriving toddler.
Not to be outdone in the bad pants department, Curry showed up in a pair of floral Bermuda shorts dripping in neon fringe, while Wilson wore camouflage cargo pants trimmed in lace and I had fun in a pair of jeans decorated with red maribou feathers.
The next edition of the Bad Pants Open golf tournament will take place Oct. 23 at the Clubs of Kingwood. The event has raised nearly $4 million for the Texas Children's Newborn Center since it was launched in 1997.
Wilson presented a proclamation from Mayor Annise Parker to Bad Pants Open committee member Les Fox of RBC Capital Markets/Wealth Management, the presenting sponsor of the tournament. Fox became involved with fundraising efforts after his twin daughters, born premature, were at the Texas Children's NICU. One daughter now works for the hospital.
