Arts in the classroom receive a major boost from heavy hitters and a TV news star
What:Community Artists' Collective annual luncheon.
Where: The Junior League of Houston.
The 411: The creative process and the role of art in education were focus of the luncheon that was chaired by Mary Holt Ashley and Gayle DeGeurin. Joining in the spotlight were honorary chairs Dr. Penelope Gonzalez Marks and Lester Marks, who not only served as honorary chairs but also contributed artwork for the silent auction.
The luncheon featured a conversation between Marcia Brennan, professor of art history and religion at Rice University, and John Lienhard, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering at the University of Houston, in which they discussed how the arts benefit the learning process. Valerie Cassell Oliver, senior curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, led the discussion. Also on stage was KPRC Channel 2 News' Courtney Gilmore who served as emcee.
