    Shelby's Social Diary

It's a grand Scottish castle wedding for this Houston couple: When Downton Abbey meets Lone Star love

It was men in kilts and music by bagpipe as Houston public relations specialist Cherri Carbonara and offshore energy platform designer Tom McGhie were wed Saturday at Blairquhan Castle in southwestern Scotland, the groom's homeland.

More than 40 Houstonians made the jaunt across the pond for the festivities that began when the "bridesguys," male friends of the bride, were outfitted in matching kilts and kits for the traditional ceremony. In a twist on tradition, in addition to the bride's attendants, Colleen Herman and Caitlyn Herman, eight of Cherri's closest male friends donned the kilts and stood with the bride for the ceremony.

Stepping out in the gray Granite tartans were Ed Smith, Tom Fricke, Dave Herman, John Dascoulias and CultureMap editor-in-chief Clifford Pugh of Houston, and Nick Herman (Dave's son) of Austin along with former Houstonians Scott Murray and Blake Kotenbrink, who now call Washington D.C. home. Joining the kilt-clad entourage was Houston Chronicle chairman Jack Sweeney, a long-time friend of the bride who gave her away.

The lanterns came from Kate Middleton’s family’s party planning website (Party Pieces).

The organized fun, planned by Jeanne Ruberti with assistance from Nancy Beck, began on Friday night with a traditional Scottish bash that doubled as a rehearsal dinner at McCandlish Hall in the village of Straiton. The dinner menu included haggis, fish and chips and all-American hamburgers.

While the Scots taught the Americans traditional Scottish dances, the Texans, led by Joycelyn Morris, introduced the Scots to the Cotton-Eyed Joe. The weekend of partying led Pugh to note it was "Downton Abbey meets up with Texas bravado."

The wedding was attended by as many as 100 guests with the ceremony taking place in one of the main salons of the castle that was completed in 1824, though the historic site dates back to the 14th century. Following the vows, guests were treated to dinner and dancing. As Pugh emailed from Scotland, "Near midnight, guests went outside in front of the castle and lit around 50 Chinese lanterns, which slowly rose into the sky. The lanterns came from Kate Middleton’s family’s party planning website (Party Pieces)."

Also donning kilts for the wedding were Houstonians David Beck, Ward Pennebaker and Carl Kuykendall.

The Houston contingent included Heather Harvey, Ellie Sweeney, Dee Dee Harvey, Lauren Fisher, Susan Bischoff and Jim Barlow, Christine and Michael Holland, Sue Payne, Linda Kuykendall, Jackie Martin, Sandra Porter, Annette Santamaria, Brenda and Bob Johnson, Debbie and Tom Fiorito, Anne Neeson and Craig James, Bill Morris, and Susan Pennebaker.

    Top this, Houston social scene.

Houston Grand Opera’s latest fête glowed with the kind of radiance you can’t bottle, no matter how many votives you line up. The 2026 Opera Ball, dubbed Brilliance Ball: A Celebration of Light and Legacy, set the Wortham Theater Center aglow, leaving this guest with one lingering question: How exactly does one top this next year?

Chaired by longtime HGO supporters John Turner and Jerry Fischer, the evening was a love letter to opera and a curtain call for honoree Patrick Summers, whose 25-plus years of HGO artistic leadership have shaped Houston’s operatic identity into a global phenomenon.

Nearly 400 guests gathered in white tie finery, drifting through a cocktail hour where caviar-topped blinis made the rounds and martinis appeared out of nowhere. The Events Company leaned into the theme with softly illuminated dreamscape of candlelight, gold accents, and cloudlike white florals.

Soprano Renée Fleming mused over her decades-long artistic friendship with Summers. Accompanied by chief artistic officer Richard Bado on the piano, Fleming’s set included Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro” to “You’ll Never Walk Alone” to a number that could be the closest the chanteuse will get to Hip Hop.

Khori Dastoor paid tribute to Summers’ “unshakable vision,” while the maestro himself reminded the crowd that Houston’s role in the future of opera is significant. The presentation of the Silver Rose award was a gorgeous moment that marked the close of a transformative chapter as Summers prepares to step into his next role as Music Director Emeritus.

Incoming music director James Gaffigan and wife Marta made a transatlantic cameo, flying in just for the occasion before heading back to Valencia the next day. Despite canceled flights and the typical ugh that’s flying nowadays, we did hear the couple made it back to Spain in one piece.

With a starting bid of $150,000, a Steinway Spirio — pre-loaded with Summers’ performances and signed by Fleming — was another star of the show. The Big Beyond ensured the dance floor stayed anything but theoretical well into the night. Some of us, not quite ready for party to end, let Fleming’s Bel Canto album — with Summers at the helm — spill through the speakers on the drive home before we inevitably turned into pumpkins.

The ball raised more than $1.8 million in support of HGO’s productions and community initiatives.
