New Chefs In Town
Young chefs create healthy tasty treats; roll-up snacks are a big winner
There’s a bunch of new chefs in town who may be small, but their talent sure is mighty.
Revival Market has partnered with Recipe for Success to teach children about sustainable food sourcing, cooking and running a business. A team of young chefs has cooked up a scrumptious treat called "Fruit Leather Jacket" that will be sold at Revival Market through Labor Day.
Enthusiastic kids ranging from 8-to-11 years old participated in Recipe for Success’ annual Eat This! summer camp to teach food sourcing, seasonal cooking and running a business. Topics also covered include how food is marketed to kids to raise their awareness of promotion and marketing.
Campers also developed a great-tasting health product to sell at Revival, with all proceeds donated to Recipe for Success. The "Fruit Leather Jacket" (roll-ups made of peaches, honey, carrot and lemon juice), won out over "Melony Mist" (a sparkling watermelon aqua fresca).
“It was so much fun to make! It is a balanced snack; it has two different food groups including fruits and vegetables,” said 8-year-old Kiran Smith, a part of the winning team, at a announcement party at Revival Market earlier this week.
Creators of the "Fruit Leather Jacket" were Smith, River Price, Jenevieve Tsai, Reilly Troung, and Emma Troung. The "Melony Mist" was invented by Ella Taylor, Julia Brown, Alexander Brown, Helana Weaver, Katie Wallace, and Elaina Osbourne.
The "Fruit Leather Jacket" retails for $2 for a 1-ounce package, with $1 of each sale going to Recipe for Success.
Last year’s winner, a "Figgie Piggy," a fig-filled cookie, raised about $2,000 for the non-profit that combats childhood obesity by changing the way our children understand, appreciate and eat their food, and by educating and mobilizing the community to provide healthier diets for children.
