Food Fight!
Food fight! Local news stars face off against each other in a great cake battle
Eat your heart out, Pulitzer Prize . . . Houston news reporters are all about one award and one award only this May — "ace of cakes."
Each spring, the West University Kroger gathers a dozen or so local media personalities to compete in a charity cake-decorating contest, with the winner receiving a $1,000 check made out the Houston Food Bank to support hungry families, children and senior citizens throughout the region.
I wish I could say I was there for the camaraderie, but my ego was still bruised after a crushing defeat at RodeoHouston's Celebrity Goat Milking Contest in March. And while I didn't come home with the top prize (spoiler alert), I can proudly report that I didn't end up in last place (mainly because awards were only given to the three best cake designers).
Participants were given a blank sheet cake, several bags of frosting and a variety of decorations. Some veteran contestants brought their own supplies and a basic design idea. Others, like myself, came completely unprepared. To even the playing field, Kroger was kind enough to provide some talent from its own baking department.
After a blindingly fast 30 minutes, only one newsie would be crowned "ace" and get to hand over that oversized check to the Food Bank reps. Check out the slideshow above for results.
Though Tuesday, customers can purchase a variety of "Bringing Hope to the Table" tagged products, and a percentage of the sale will be donated to the Houston Food Bank.
