    Party on the Plaza

Party on the Plaza returns to downtown Houston with free concerts in a new location

    Apr 25, 2017 | 2:22 pm

Next week, Party on the Plaza returns for the second time around. The free concert series kicks off May 3 at Avenida Houston Plaza with a performance by Los Skarnales and will continue with different entertainment acts every Wednesday night in May and June. (UPDATE: The first Party on the Plaza has been rescheduled to Thursday, May 4, due to inclement weather.)

During the late '80s until around 2005, the popular after-work affair was held at Jones Plaza in the Theater District, providing downtown office workers a place to let down their hair at the end of a long day. It is being revived to showcase the new Avenida Houston as a "true entertainment destination," Dawn Ullrich, president and CEO of Houston First Corporation, said in a press release.

Houston First officials have been instrumental in the development of Avenida Houston near Discovery Green and the George R. Brown Convention Center, which now includes a number of new restaurants and bars, including Xochi and Biggio's at the Marriott Marquis hotel, and a new Grotto adjacent to the convention center, plus a pedestrian area with art installations and events.

DJ spins (5:30 pm) will get the party started, with the highlight of the evening, performances by an eclectic lineup of local and regional artists (7-9 pm), sealing the dance party deal. Mark your calendars now for the headliners below.

May 4: Los Skarnales with Muddy Belle
Dance the night way to the sounds of 20-year Texas music scene veterans Los Skarnales, who present a unique fusion of ska, cumbia, and reggae with a twist of punk. Also hitting the stage is Houston rock n' soul band, Muddy Belle.

May 10: Allen Oldies with Rudy and the Reckless
Expect a hit parade of '50s and '60s songs from The Allen Oldies Band, who have been performing since 1996, followed by smooth, fiddle-driven rock tunes by Ruby and the Reckless.

May 17: Mango Punch with Gio Chamba
Gyrate to high-energy dance music, in both English and Spanish, by Latin pop band Mango Punch. Keep on grooving as tropical fusion duo Gio Chamba takes to the stage directly after, with songs from latin cumbia to hip-hop and electronica.

May 24: SoulDig with Sherita Perez
SoulDig’s deep soulful grooves meet music by Gulf Coast indie-folk singer/songwriter Sherita Perez when the two headline Party on the Plaza at the end of May.

May 31: Nick Gaitan with Nico Diaz
Nick Gaitan and the Umbrella Man band take center stage, presenting a mix of swamp-pop, Tex-Mex, soul, straight-up country, swing and rock 'n' roll, while follow-up act Nico Diaz promises jazzy Latin rock influenced by Latin folk and Nova Trova (Cuban music).

June 7: Ishi with Romina Von Mohr
Soul, funk and house beats by electronic band Ishi guarantee a fun night, especially with Romina Von Mohr and her rhythmic tunes, featuring catchy, wandering melodies, also on the bill.

June 14: Say Girl Say with El Lago
Multi-instrumental female duo Say Girl Say are known for intertwining, haunting harmonies that break your heart while leaving you wanting for more. They're joined on the roster by Galveston band El Lago, who add a dream-pop, post-punk, shoegaze, and '80s alternative spin to the evening.

    June 21: Brownout with Vodi
Hardcore grooves and breakbeats by nine-piece psychedelic Latin-funk collective Brownout, along with effortless hooks and nostalgic sounds by six-piece indie rock band Vodi, are sure to get you into a groovy state of mind.

June 28: Fat Tony with Young Mammals
Nigerian-American rapper Fat Tony brings his laid-back, lyrical swagger to Party on the Plaza. The Young Mammals offer a distinct combination of blustery power-pop and hushed art punk with drawn-out guitar riffs.

Party on the Plaza is a free event. For more details, click here.

True-story film Roofman stars Channing Tatum as a charming criminal

Earlier in 2025 director Darren Aronofsky released the action thriller Caught Stealing, a film that — while successful — was at odds with the rest of his filmography. Writer/director Derek Cianfrance has made a similar whiplash pivot with his new film, Roofman, an effort that has little in common with his most well-known works, each of which were intense dramas with tragic elements.

This film tells the real-life story of Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), who earns the nickname of “Roofman” after breaking into a series of fast food restaurants via their roofs in order to rob them. Those crimes send him to jail for a long sentence, but he soon breaks out using a simple-yet-ingenious method. Now on the run in Charlotte, North Carolina, he comes up with another smart way to stay hidden: In a rarely-checked display in the middle of a Toys “R” Us store.

His plan leaves him plenty of time to explore the store at night and get to know the habits of the employees during the day, including manager Mitch (Peter Dinklage) and Leigh Wainscott (Kirsten Dunst), a single mom struggling to make ends meet and get along with her kids. Boredom soon sends Jeffrey out of the store, where he makes friends with Leigh under the assumed name of John Zorn, a relationship that becomes bigger than anticipated and imperils his fugitive status.

With much of the early 2000s-set film taking place inside the Toys “R” Us, Cianfrance and co-writer Kirt Gunn keep most of the story whimsical and fun. It’s an interesting trick to make a person who has committed multiple crimes, traumatized one family, and started down the road toward traumatizing another into a lovable protagonist, but the filmmakers pull it off. Jeffrey/John is portrayed as a goofy guy who just makes a series of really bad decisions, with even his victims finding it hard to bad-mouth him.

As the manhunt for Manchester continues during the many months of his hideout, there’s little doubt that things will go poorly for him in the end. However, Cianfrance and his team manage to structure the film in a way where it’s almost easy to forget he’s on the run from the law. While the film elides his ability to come and go from the store at will, it sets up his character so well that it’s easy to just go with the flow and enjoy the ride while it lasts.

What’s curious about the film, though, is the stacked supporting cast it has assembled. It includes Emmy winner Dinklage as the store manager, Oscar nominee LaKeith Stanfield as an old war buddy of Jeffrey, Emmy winners Ben Mendelssohn and Uzo Aduba as the leaders of the church where Jeffrey woos Leigh, and Emmy nominee Juno Temple as the war buddy’s girlfriend. While it’s a pleasure to see each of them, none of them have what would be considered meaty roles, so their collective talents are mostly wasted.

Tatum has a natural charm to him that makes him perfect for this type of part. He believably embodies a guy who knows the difference between right and wrong, and yet continues to do wrong on a consistent basis. It’s nice to see Dunst in a less dramatic role after The Power of the Dog and Civil War, and she elevates a role that could’ve been forgettable in other hands.

Roofman is much different from most of the films Cianfrance has made, which makes it surprising that he is successful in pulling off its generally comic tone. The golden retriever vibe of Tatum helps out in a big way, as does the story that would be unbelievable if it weren’t true.

    ---

Roofman opens in theaters on October 10.
