A shout out to Queen: Houston Chamber Choir gets down for Bohemian Rhapsody

    Joel Luks
    Apr 17, 2013 | 3:09 pm

It may be the big four that anchor the city's art scene. But in addition to the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Alley Theatre and Houston Grand Opera, it's the smaller groups that add their own tune to the Bayou City's cultural score and paint the town with artful diversity.

Among them is the Houston Chamber Choir, whose second fundraising gala on Sunday grew from last year's affair. The choir welcomed 170 donors to the Czech Center Museum Houston for a buffet supper, mini concert and both silent and live auctions.

This isn't a spirit fingers glee club, although the 24 professional choristers don't shy away from belting notes that reach beyond their classical training. A selection by Czech nationalist composer Antonín Dvořák sure was fitting as the opening number, but tongue-in-cheek songs such as The Who's "Pinball Wizard" and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," which showed off alto Ryan Stickney and soprano Kelli Shircliffe, had guests smiling and wiggling in their chairs.

Robert Simpson honored Moores School of Music director David Ashley White, whose compositions have become a standard in the repertoire of many choral ensembles.

Artistic director Robert Simpson honored University of Houston Moores School of Music director David Ashley White, whose compositions have become a standard in the repertoire of many choral ensembles. In fact, Houston Chamber Choir's first ever commissioned piece, The Blue Estuaries, was by White.

On the auction block was a painting of Simpson by Huntsville native David Adickes, a sparkly Baccarat vase bundle with a fresh monthly flowers courtesy of Aubrey Sellers and trips to New York City and New Mexico. Former board chair and funny man John McCoy's auctioneer skills cleaned up some wallets to help raise $78,000 for the nonprofit, setting a record for the Houston Chamber Choir.

Luck was on the side of Adele and Dr. Anthony Gorody — the door prize, a floral arrangement also by Sellers, was theirs to keep.

In the melodious affair with executive director Becky Tobin and hubby Stephen were Laura and Michael Puzio, Stefanie and Philip de Gruyter, Sally and Mike Clark, board chair Frank Hood, Alan Austin, Paul English, Effie and Bill Rosene, Melissa McCrimmon and Eric Larson, Stephanie Dory, Robin Angly, and David Whorton.

Hermann Park’s garden party proves storms can’t rain on this elephant parade

Even as ominous clouds loomed above, Hermann Park shined brightly during Evening in the Park, Hermann Park Conservancy's signature gala held on Thursday, April 24. Crica 500 devoted supporters, decked in their spring cocktail finest, gathered at Molly Ann Smith Plaza to toast a landmark year: The first anniversary of the Family Commons, a vibrant 26-acre expansion redefining community connection in the historic park.

Guests kicked off the night at Lindsey Plaza, boarding the Hermann Park Railroad for a whimsical ride through the commons, where they encountered The Great Elephant Migration. This installation of nearly 100 life-sized elephant sculptures spread a message of conservation and coexistence.

As twilight settled, guests mingled beside the Pioneer Memorial Obelisk during a lively cocktail hour. With McGovern Lake mirroring the soft evening hues, old friends reunited and new connections blossomed over crisp hors d'oeuvres and refreshing sips.

This year's gala honored the Radoff family — Bunny Radoff, Russell and Jody Radoff, and Bradley and Monica Radoff — whose enduring commitment to Hermann Park has helped nourish its evolution as a sanctuary for all Houstonians. Event co-chairs Kathryn and Travis Boeker and Katherine Whaley and Chris Wadley crafted a night that balanced heartfelt reflection with festive celebration.

During dinner, conservancy board chair Roslyn Bazzelle Mitchell reminded the audience why their support matters.

"Hermann Park is where Houston comes together," she said. "We’re nurturing a sanctuary — a space where generations grow, connect, reflect, and celebrate."

The evening raised an impressive $690,000, securing crucial funding for the organization’s mission of stewardship and enhancement of this century-old green haven.

Amid the amicable garden party were Kenneth Allen, Fady Armanious and Bill Baldwin, John Bishop, Kristy Bradshaw, Janet Clark, Isabel David, Paula and Reginald DesRoches, Mac and Cece Fowler, Kevin Foyle, Lisa Helfman, Emily Keeton, Linda and George Kelly, Carey Kirkpatrick, Ann Kennedy and Geoffrey Walker, David Leebron and Y. Ping Sun, Marley Lott, Laura and Brad McWilliams, Tai and Cory Quarles, Allison and Troy Thacker, Stephanie and Frank Tsuru, Phoebe and Bobby Tudor, Hallie Vanderhider and Bobby Dees, Claudia de Vasco and Gabriel Olson, Sally Anne Schmidt and Marc Tabolsk, and Nicole and Joey Romano.
