Owner's suite is celeb central at Astros opener: Lyle Lovett, J.J. Watt & others celebrate big win

Shelby Hodge
Apr 1, 2013 | 12:01 pm

Once J.J. Watt had tossed out the ceremonial first pitch in Minute Maid Park and after Lyle Lovett had sung the national anthem, the two stars of two very different worlds made their way to the upper level of the baseball stadium to join Astros owner Jim Crane and wife Franci in the family suitefor the MLB season opener.

While the VIPs and Astros partners hung in the suite for the game, the Cranes made a drive-by, spending most of the night in their Diamond Club seats with Mayor Annise Parker. They were joined in their front-row thrones by Andre Johnson and Watt, who arrived after a round of photos and autographs upstairs in the family suite.

Spirits ran high in the suite where Astros partners Janet Gurwitch, John Eddie Williams, Michael Gamson and Mike Plank had gathered. Plank and other partners will be playing today in the owners softball game — Rangers vs. Astros — at Minute Maid. Before the competition, the owners of both teams will be treated to lunch in the River Oaks home of Terri and John Havens (another partner), the lunch co-hosted by the Rangers' Amy and Neil Leibman.

Back in the suite the entire Plank family wore their bright orange personalized Astros jerseys, a gift to each of the partners. Not all partners were into the jersey thing but the ladies carried their orange Hermés handbags or displayed other color-appropriate accessories.

Dining on hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn, brownies and ice cream sundaes were guests that included former Mayor Bill White, Andrea White, Sheridan Williams, Ron Franklin, Houston Parks director Joe Turner, Roz and Alan Pactor, Susan Cooley and Sara and Bill Morgan.

Special guests in the Crane suite at Minute Maid Park included Houston Texan J.J. Watt, left, and Texans staffer Mike Parson.

Posh Uptown Park boutiqueElizabeth Anthony lit up the sky with the Houston debut of Jason Wu's 2023 Spring/Summer Collection at the 7th Annual Go Red for Women Fashion Show.

Fashionistas turned out in droves to catch a glimpse of the designer seated front and center through the entire show – a bold move as designers usually stay in the back until the final walk – and to get the first look at his newest designs.

Fall is a big time for fashion. Designers unveil their latest creations during fashion shows in Paris, New York, Milan and London. Wu, who famously dressed Michelle Obama for two inaugural balls and her recently debuted White House portrait, was no exception. His latest line is full of light and semi-sheer fabrics, along with floral designs from artist Leonardo Pucci, who Wu discovered on Instagram. His collection is the epitome of sophistication and laid-back glamour – very fitting of women's desire for the perfect blend of the two.

Wu's stop in Houston is part of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women signature campaign to raise awareness that heart disease is women's most significant health threat. Several notable Houstonians took part in the fashion show, including Katherine Whaley, Ursaline Hamilton, Dr. Ruth Bush, Jordan Seff, ShelaghMichael Brown, and Kristina Somerville.

We sat down with Wu to talk about his affinity towards Houston, his latest collection and his love of Texas barbeque.

CultureMap: Why is it important for you to showcase your Spring/Summer 2023 collection in Houston?

Jason Wu: Houston loves glamour. I wanted to focus on highlighting the beauty of the garment's interior through inside-out details, creating a key theme seen throughout the collection. People are dressing up again, and now every moment is a moment and why shouldn't it be? If the last two years have taught us anything, it's that these moments are fleeting, and every second should be celebrated.

CM: What is your connection to Elizabeth Anthony?

JW: We have a long-standing relationship with Elizabeth Anthony, with whom we have partnered on several large-scale philanthropic events. Our values & ideals of fashion & beauty have always aligned with Julie Roberts's dedication to exceptional service to her clients.

CM: Where do you feel Houston fits in the fashion landscape?

JW: Houston is a wonderful and vibrant city. I am always intrigued by the incredible art scene here, and one of my pinch-me moments while visiting was having a private tour of Mrs. de Menil's home.

CM: What can we expect to see regarding colors, textures and visual elements for Spring 2023?

JW: Spring 2023 is an homage to the paired-down glamour of 90's American fashion. I also collaborated with artist Leonardo Pucci on a series of prints based on his photographs of "Shibari Flowers."

CM: Who has been your style icon this year?

JW:Sherry Shi, who is from Houston, is an incredible talent that has been in many of my fashion shows. She is beautiful, vibrant, and an amazing representation of the Jason Wu woman.

CM: Where do you love to eat when you come to Houston?

JW: I am quite the foodie, and I never leave Houston without getting some famous Texas BBQ. My favorites are from Feges BBQ and Truth BBQ.

Shania Twain rides into Houston to reclaim her throne on upcoming world tour

Shania Twain will play at Dos Equis Pavilion on July 21, 2023 as part of her Queen of Me Tour.

Country music star Shania Twain is embarking on an expansive world tour dubbed the Queen of Me Tour, which will come to Dos Equis Pavilion in the Houston area on July 22, 2023 at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands.

The Houston date is one of the last of 44 North American concerts currently scheduled on the tour before Twain heads to Europe for five final shows. In addition to Dallas, she will also play in Houston on July 21.

This is Twain's first tour in nearly five years; she last played in Houston in June 2018. She'll be joined on the tour by a variety of well-known current female stars; Arlington native Mickey Guyton will be her special guest in both Houston and Dallas.

The tour was announced in conjunction with the news of the upcoming release of her new album, also called Queen of Me, due out on February 3, 2023. Her first album since 2017, it is also the first with her new record label, Republic Nashville.

The sales of that album will add to her record of being the best-selling female artist in country music history, a record she's achieved despite releasing only five albums in her 30-year career.

Twain has remained a star all these years thanks to three massive albums - 1995's The Woman in Me, 1997's Come On Over, and 2002's Up! - each of which sold over 11 million copies in the U.S. alone. She also has seven No. 1 hits and eight more top 10 hits from those three albums.

Tickets for the tour will go on sale starting 10 am Friday, November 4 at LiveNation.com. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning 10 am Tuesday, November 1 until 10 pm Thursday, November 3 through the Citi Entertainment program.

Barstool Sports founder-internet celeb Dave Portnoy tears into 2 Houston pies for famed One Bite Reviews

Gypsy Poet margherita pizza
The Gypsy Poet/Facebook

The Gypsy Poet's margherita earns a strong score.

America’s most prolific pizza reviewer offered his opinion on two popular Houston pies this week. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy sampled pizzas from The Gypsy Poet in Midtown and downtown staple Frank’s Pizza.

Portnoy, in town to promote the High Noon brand of boozy seltzers, is well known for his One Bite Pizza Reviews. To date, he’s reviewed hundreds of restaurants all over the country on a one to 10 scale. Restaurants that score an eight or better can count on an influx of business from his 4.4 million Instagram followers, 2.7 million Twitter followers, and almost 770,000 Youtube subscribers.

Unable to make it to Gypsy Poet in person, Portnoy has it delivered approximately one mile to the Spec’s in Midtown. Typically, Portnoy reviews pizzas fresh out of the oven, but Gypsy Poet’s pizza takes about 10 minutes to reach him.

Initially, he regards the pizza skeptically, but the local favorite wins him over. “Wow,” he says. “Pizza’s really good.”

He awards it a 7.8 “with a legit chance to be in the eights” if he had eaten it hot. Owners Vanessa Fernandez and Cesar Monticelli told Fox 26 they’ve received an influx of orders since the review debuted Monday night.

Frank’s, unfortunately, doesn’t fare as well. “This is drunk pizza. What are people doing at 2:30 pm on a Thursday acting like this is the best delicacy in the history of the world? Come on, Houston,” Portnoy declares.

“Frank’s is a 5.4,” he concludes. “I cannot lie.”

With the Astros in the World Series, perhaps Portnoy will return and sample a few more pies. Given his affinity for New York-style slices, perhaps he’d enjoy Pizaro’s, Romano’s, or, if he doesn’t mind a bit of a drive, Energy Corridor favorite Brother’s.
