Here are the top 9 things to do in Houston this weekend

The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is winding down this weekend, as Garth Brooks closes the whole thing out with a Sunday, March 18 showcase. Spring break also wraps up, which means kids will go back to school and parents can finally get some peace and quiet.

There are still a lot of great things to be done this weekend, and we’ve rounded up some can't-miss events.

Thursday, March 15

Beers, beards, and Travolta at Bagby Park
Bagby Park will have two very interesting events happening on its grounds this Thursday evening. First up at 6 pm, there is “Beer and Beards,” where we’re assuming people with beards can show up, drink beer at Rico’s Morning + Noon + Night and have fun doing beer pong, ping-pong and other things involving balls. Then, at 8 pm, there’s an outdoor screening of the 1980, made-in-Houston flick Urban Cowboy, starring John Travolta. (Needless to say, the park is screening this because the town is currently in Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo mode.) Both events are free.

The Green Fog at the MFAH
If you aren’t aware of the work of Canadian filmmaker/artist Guy Maddin, you should know dude gets very experimental with his films. His latest project, the hour-long The Green Fog, is a “parallel-universe version” of the Alfred Hitchcock classic Vertigo. And since Hitchcock famously used San Francisco as Vertigo’s setting, Madden assembles shot-in-the-Bay Area footage from other movies, as well as ’70s prime-time TV and, of course, experimental films. It’ll be at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston this weekend, and the first screening is Thursday at 4 pm.

Friday, March 16
Choose hate over love with comedian
NEMR
NEMR, the first Lebanese-American comedian to appear the cover of a regional version of Rolling Stone, is in town in support of his "Love Isn’t the Answer" tour. Nemr points out out that people say things like, ‘All you need is love! Love will take care of things,’” But Nemr says, “Love isn’t the answer. The answer is actually hate! When you hate being in a situation, you’re like, ‘I’m going to make a difference.’” NEMR showcases the ironic similarities between Arabs and Americans at the Houston Improv through Sunday, March 18.

Paul Thorn's Southern rock at the Heights Theater
Mississippi singer-songwriter Paul Thorn is known for churning out music that’s usually a mashup of blues, Southern rock, country and Americana. But with his new album Ride with the Devil (which drops next Friday), he’s taking it all the way back to his childhood days as the son of a preacher man, being riveted by the all-black, gospel choirs he grew up listening to. Devil also includes appearances from The Blind Boys of Alabama, The McCrary Sisters and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Thorn will perform at the Heights Theater, Friday at 8 pm.

Saturday, March 17

Meet CultureMap’s Eric Sandler at Fluff Bake Bar
Houston's "Sugar Hooker" Becky Masson— pastry chef and owner of Fluff Bake Bar — is hosting a pop-up bake sale with CultureMap food editor Eric Sandler. The lively duo will collaborate on a menu of sweet and savory items inspired by Jewish deli classics. Expect baked treats such as strawberry rugelach, everything bagels, latkes, corned beef sandwiches on freshly baked challah, and savory hamentaschen. Things get cooking at 10 am, and run until noon.

St. Patrick’s Day downtown drinking and shopping
Yes, you could just get wasted this St. Patty’s Day, wandering the streets popping into pubs, downing green beer, and feeling the urge to fight every time “Jump Around” starts playing. However, you could pace yourself, and close out the day doing something good for the environment. Discovery Green will host an eco-conscious shopping event called “Flea by Night,” where visitors can shop for vintage, handmade, recycled, re-purposed and renewed goods. There will also be live music, food trucks and, maybe, more beer. It starts at 6 pm.

8th Wonder Brewery’s annual “Celebr8ion of Beer”
Come this weekend, it’ll be five years that 8th Wonder Brewery, a local beer outlet that has given us such entertainingly named ales as Brewston, Dome Faux’m and Side Hustle Haterade, has been in business. And, once again, Wonder is throwing its annual birthday bash, known as the “Celebr8ion of Beer.” Along with the fine concoctions that patrons can sample (GA ticketholders get four beer tokens, while it’s an open bar for VIP folk), the brewery will have live music from The Soul Rebels, Organ Freeman, The Texas Gentlemen and DJ Good Grief. It starts at 2 pm.

Sunday, March 18
Gus Dapperton’s nerd-pop at Rockefeller’s
Gus Dapperton looks more like a guy going to a cosplay party as Stuart Minkus, that nerdy character from Boy Meets World, than a pop performer on the rise. Rocking a bald-on-the-sides bowl cut, glasses and clothing straight out of the JC Penney catalog circa 1987, Dapperton performs the sort of dreamy, retro pop fellow contemporaries like Mac DeMarco are bringing back into style. And while his songs may have goofy titles like “Prune, You Talk Funny” and “I’m Just Snacking,” the videos have gotten millions of views on YouTube. He’ll be at Rockefeller’s, this Sunday at 7 pm.

A refreshing party at McIntyre’s
If you're looking for a lively event with a little flavor, head out to McIntyre's this weekend to enjoy the newest Austin Eastcider flavor, Ruby Red. Catch live music by Clay Melton Band, and DJ Baby Roo. To make the partying easier, Austin Eastciders has teamed up with Lyft: Use code RUBYREDCIDER for $10 off your ride to, and $10 off your ride from, McIntyre's. The party starts at 3 pm.

Posh Uptown Park boutiqueElizabeth Anthony lit up the sky with the Houston debut of Jason Wu's 2023 Spring/Summer Collection at the 7th Annual Go Red for Women Fashion Show.

Fashionistas turned out in droves to catch a glimpse of the designer seated front and center through the entire show – a bold move as designers usually stay in the back until the final walk – and to get the first look at his newest designs.

Julie Roberts (center), Jason Wu, Jennifer Mohler Graves, and guest at the 7thAnnual Go Red for Women Fashion Show featuring Wu's Spring/Summer 2023 collection.

Fall is a big time for fashion. Designers unveil their latest creations during fashion shows in Paris, New York, Milan and London. Wu, who famously dressed Michelle Obama for two inaugural balls and her recently debuted White House portrait, was no exception. His latest line is full of light and semi-sheer fabrics, along with floral designs from artist Leonardo Pucci, who Wu discovered on Instagram. His collection is the epitome of sophistication and laid-back glamour – very fitting of women's desire for the perfect blend of the two.

Wu's stop in Houston is part of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women signature campaign to raise awareness that heart disease is women's most significant health threat. Several notable Houstonians took part in the fashion show, including Katherine Whaley, Ursaline Hamilton, Dr. Ruth Bush, Jordan Seff, ShelaghMichael Brown, and Kristina Somerville.

We sat down with Wu to talk about his affinity towards Houston, his latest collection and his love of Texas barbeque.

CultureMap: Why is it important for you to showcase your Spring/Summer 2023 collection in Houston?

Jason Wu: Houston loves glamour. I wanted to focus on highlighting the beauty of the garment's interior through inside-out details, creating a key theme seen throughout the collection. People are dressing up again, and now every moment is a moment and why shouldn't it be? If the last two years have taught us anything, it's that these moments are fleeting, and every second should be celebrated.

CM: What is your connection to Elizabeth Anthony?

JW: We have a long-standing relationship with Elizabeth Anthony, with whom we have partnered on several large-scale philanthropic events. Our values & ideals of fashion & beauty have always aligned with Julie Roberts's dedication to exceptional service to her clients.

CM: Where do you feel Houston fits in the fashion landscape?

JW: Houston is a wonderful and vibrant city. I am always intrigued by the incredible art scene here, and one of my pinch-me moments while visiting was having a private tour of Mrs. de Menil's home.

CM: What can we expect to see regarding colors, textures and visual elements for Spring 2023?

JW: Spring 2023 is an homage to the paired-down glamour of 90's American fashion. I also collaborated with artist Leonardo Pucci on a series of prints based on his photographs of "Shibari Flowers."

CM: Who has been your style icon this year?

JW:Sherry Shi, who is from Houston, is an incredible talent that has been in many of my fashion shows. She is beautiful, vibrant, and an amazing representation of the Jason Wu woman.

CM: Where do you love to eat when you come to Houston?

JW: I am quite the foodie, and I never leave Houston without getting some famous Texas BBQ. My favorites are from Feges BBQ and Truth BBQ.

Shania Twain rides into Houston to reclaim her throne on upcoming world tour

Shania Twain will play at Dos Equis Pavilion on July 21, 2023 as part of her Queen of Me Tour.

Country music star Shania Twain is embarking on an expansive world tour dubbed the Queen of Me Tour, which will come to Dos Equis Pavilion in the Houston area on July 22, 2023 at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands.

The Houston date is one of the last of 44 North American concerts currently scheduled on the tour before Twain heads to Europe for five final shows. In addition to Dallas, she will also play in Houston on July 21.

This is Twain's first tour in nearly five years; she last played in Houston in June 2018. She'll be joined on the tour by a variety of well-known current female stars; Arlington native Mickey Guyton will be her special guest in both Houston and Dallas.

The tour was announced in conjunction with the news of the upcoming release of her new album, also called Queen of Me, due out on February 3, 2023. Her first album since 2017, it is also the first with her new record label, Republic Nashville.

The sales of that album will add to her record of being the best-selling female artist in country music history, a record she's achieved despite releasing only five albums in her 30-year career.

Twain has remained a star all these years thanks to three massive albums - 1995's The Woman in Me, 1997's Come On Over, and 2002's Up! - each of which sold over 11 million copies in the U.S. alone. She also has seven No. 1 hits and eight more top 10 hits from those three albums.

Tickets for the tour will go on sale starting 10 am Friday, November 4 at LiveNation.com. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning 10 am Tuesday, November 1 until 10 pm Thursday, November 3 through the Citi Entertainment program.

What's Eric Eating Episode 262

Sneak peek of Houston's new live fire steakhouse, plus the latest food news

Michael Sambrooks, left, and Louis Maldonado, second from right, are this week's guests.

On this week's episode of "What's Eric Eating," Sambrooks Management Group founder Michael Sambrooks and executive chef Louis Maldonado join CultureMap food editor Eric Sandler to preview Andiron, the company's new live fire steakhouse that will open in December in the historic Star Engraving building on Allen Parkway.

The conversation begins with Maldonado, who competed on the New Orleans season of Top Chef and was named People magazine's sexiest chef in 2018, discussing the roots of his culinary career and his decision to move to Houston to work at Andiron. Sambrooks talks about the decision to open a steakhouse and how he thinks Andiron will distinguish itself from other restaurants, particularly in terms of ingredients and its use of a range of life fire techniques.

Sandler notes that steakhouses aren't typically chef-driven restaurants. He asks Maldonado what he adds to the restaurant that will help Andiron stand out.

"Honestly, it's questioning the steakhouse standard. The creative side is obvious, but also questioning, what is it? What is a steakhouse? We're going to have a sauce program. We'll have a saucier to do beautiful sauce work," he says. My role is driving the creativity, the vision."

Listen to the full interview to hear Sambrooks discuss the restaurant's different dining rooms and his expectations for the experience. Maldonado also shares some of his favorite meals in Houston so far.

Prior to the interview, Sandler and co-host Linda Salinas discuss the news of the week. Their topics include: a quick recap of the best bites at this year's Southern Smoke festival; chef Christine Ha's plans to open a new sandwich shop in Spring Branch; and Niko Niko's opening a new location in The Woodlands.
