Rihanna's Fashion Debut
Rihanna debuts 'Glamorous Goth' collection with a strong point of view
What: Fenty Puma by Rihanna runway show.
Where: New York Fashion Week.
Background: Fashion rules are made to be broken, Rihanna told the audience at the CFDA Fashion Awards in 2014 when she was honored as the year's style icon. She's getting a chance to test out her theory as creative director for her first-ever Fenty Puma By Rihanna Collection. The 27-year-old singer known for her urban street style debuted her collection amid an industrial ice jungle setting with lots of chrome that resembled an "arctic urban forest."
The look: Call it "Glamorous Goth." Drawing inspiration from Japanese street culture, the singer/designer blurs the lines between genders with gothic overtones and exaggerated volumes and proportions (hoodies are oversized and jackets and tops have extra long sleeves).
Attention-getting looks include a ground-sweeping kimono robe, tear-away tricot track suits, a velvet bomber jacket and lace-up jersey corsets and skintight bodysuits, crop tops and hot pants. Many styles were accessorized with chunky cross chokers and rosary-style body chains, circa '80s Madonna.
Celebrities: Model sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid, in silver hair and dark lips, walked the runway while the audience included such celebrities as Chris Rock, Naomi Campbell, Houston Texans wide receiver Jaelen Strong, Houston recording artist Travis Scott, fashion designer Jeremy Scott, tattoo artist Bang Bang and singers Ne-Yo and Pete Wentz.
