Houston's Hobby Airport saw sharp passenger decline in 2025, per study

Houston's airport struggles may worsen as the government shutdown continues.

    William P. Hobby Airport/Facebook

A new global airport travel study has revealed passenger traffic at Houston's William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) sharply decreased from 2024 to 2025.

The analysis from travel magazine LocalsInsider examined recently released data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the U.S. International Trade Association, and a nationwide survey to determine the following American traveler habits: The most popular U.S. and international destinations, emerging hotspots, and destinations on the decline. The study covered passenger travel trends from January through July 2025.

In the report's ranking of the 40 U.S. airports with the sharpest declines in passenger traffic, HOU ranked 13th on the list.

About 4.26 million arrivals were reported at HOU from January through July 2024, compared to about 3.96 million during the same seven-month period in 2025. According to the data, that's a significant 7.1 percent drop in passenger traffic year-over-year, or a loss of 300,974 passengers.

"As travelers chase new hotspots, some destinations are seeing reduced passenger traffic whether due to rising costs, shifting airline schedules, or evolving traveler preferences, some destinations are seeing a decrease in visitors," the report's author wrote.

HOU's passenger traffic may soon see improvements as federal agencies reopen, but it's not guaranteed. HOU and George Bush Intercontinental Airport had both been included on the Federal Aviation Administration's list of 40 "high volume" airports that would experience capacity cuts and flight cancellations due to the government shutdown. However, USAToday warns that flight disruptions may continue as the FAA evaluates whether services can return to normal.

Passenger traffic declines elsewhere in Texas
It appears most major Texas airports had drops in passenger traffic from 2024 to 2025. Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL) was the worst offender in the state with a dramatic 7.4 percent dip in arrivals. DAL also ranked 11th on the list of U.S. airports with the steepest declines in passenger traffic.

More than 5.13 million arrivals were reported at DAL from January through July 2024, compared to over 4.75 million during the same seven-month period in 2025.

This is how passenger traffic has fallen at other major Texas airports from 2024 to 2025:

    Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS):

    • 6,107,597 – Passenger arrivals from January to July 2024
    • 5,828,396 – Passenger arrivals from January to July 2025
    • -4.6 percent – Year-over-year passenger change
    Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW):
    • 23,830,017 – Passenger arrivals from January to July 2024
    • 23,251,302 – Passenger arrivals from January to July 2025
    • -2.4 percent – Year-over-year passenger change

    San Antonio International Airport (SAT):

    • 2,937,870 – Passenger arrivals from January to July 2024
    • 2,836,774 – Passenger arrivals from January to July 2025
    • -3.4 percent – Year-over-year passenger change
    El Paso International Airport (ELP):
    • 1,094,431 – Passenger arrivals from January to July 2024
    • 1,076,845 – Passenger arrivals from January to July 2025
    • -1.6 percent – Year-over-year passenger change

Haunted Texas attraction ranks among America's 5 scariest for 2026

Thrillvania in Terrell ranked No. 5 scariest haunted attraction in the United States.

Since spooky season ends this weekend, it's time for Texas daredevils facing tons of scary options to make some tough choices. Thrillvania, located 30-40 minutes east of Dallas in Terrell, is a no-brainer, experts say.

America Haunts, a national association that tracks haunted attraction industry trends, ranked the Top 5 Scariest Haunted Attractions in the United States and “recognized five mega-haunts that have mastered very different approaches to creating the kind of fear” for which thrill-seekers actively search.

Thrillvania creeped in at No. 5 in the national list, earning praise for its staying power and storytelling.

“The sprawling setting and continual updates have shaped its reputation for decades,” America Haunts adds in a press release. “Don’t expect refuge just because the space is big. When the scarecast seeks, it knows how to find its target.”

Thrillvania has three haunted houses spread across 50 acres. Fear at the Terrell property is rooted in narrative, the haunted attraction analysts say.

Central to Thrillvania is Verdun Manor, Verdun Manor, where the dead, undead, and creatures more beast than man await.

Baron Verdun and Lady Cassandra, a vampire and werewolf, were once inhabitants of the mansion, the legend goes. Through the haunted manor, cemetery, and Voodoo Bayou, their gruesome story unfolds.

On the busiest nights it might take an hour or two to access the main attractions; however, guests enter the fantasy world before reaching the mansion itself, making the journey part of the narrative.

In Cassandra’s House of Clowns, a giant brain connected to a mysterious apparatus has transformed the attraction’s clown world into something even more sinister and surreal.

Sam Hain’s Trail of Torment adds a final leg to the tour and challenges those who make it so far to determine what is real and what is delusion, according to the review.

The rest of America Haunts' top five scariest haunted attractions are:

    • No. 1: The Dent Schoolhouse in Cincinnati, Ohio
    • No. 2: Nightmare New England in Litchfield, New Hampshire near Boston
    • No. 3: The 13th Gate in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
    • No. 4: Bennett’s Curse Haunted House in Dundalk, just outside of Baltimore, Maryland

What those who made the list have in common is not a particular monster, effect, room, or scare technique, America Haunts reports: “It is the ability to create an immersive world that keeps guests wondering what will happen next while relentlessly layering scares upon scares.”

Thrillvania Haunted House Park is located at 2330 Co Rd 138, Terrell, Texas. It is open Friday-Sunday through October 25 and October 29-Halloween night. Tickets run $29.99 on Thursday, $39.99 on Sundays, and $44.99 Fridays and Saturdays and can be purchased on Thrillvania's website.
