Logos on your eyelids: New BMW movie ad gets under your skin (with video)
It's easy to ignore billboards and skip through Tivo'ed commercials, but what if companies found a way to temporarily imprint an advertisement into your conscious?
The German car manufacturer has devised a way for to "turn spectators into astonished fans . . . to literally get inside peoples' heads." In a movie ad for BMW motorcycles that plays in German theaters, the BMW logo is illuminated with a "harmless" photo flash. The audience only perceives a brief, bright light, but sees the logo when instructed to close their eyes.
The effect is similar to that of staring into the sun, after which one sees an illuminated disk when the eyes are closed. The guerilla ad campaign brings to mind certain terms like "mind control." Even so, we're suddenly compelled to go for a test drive.
