Each year during ski season, the glitterati from fabulous cities around the world migrate to Aspen to strap on skis, swaddle themselves in fur coats and boots and sip après ski cocktails at The Little Nell. The crowd is chic, the restaurants are full and the town is a picturesque snow scene. At the height of ski season, Aspen is peppered with celebs (I sipped my Starbucks next to Lyle Lovett and danced next to Paris Hilton at the Caribou Club) and the roster of good restaurants and chic shopping is long.

Having spent some time perusing the scene and eating, drinking and snowboarding my way into the New Year, I have compiled a list of all of the must-do’s for a great ski vacation in Aspen:

    Where to Eat

For the crème de la crème, dine at Cache Cache. My lobster tagliatelle appetizer was more than memorable. Make sure to book far in advance and befriend owner Jodi – she is very loyal to her clientele.

Don’t miss Chef Nobu’s Aspen experience at Matsuhisa. For the optimal experience, go for the tasting menu.

Dine downstairs with the “public” at Italian hot spot Casa Tua, or purchase a long or short term membership for the private club experience upstairs. The space, a former Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, feels homey yet chic with white ceilings and gray walls scattered with rotating photographs (currently of Marilyn Monroe). Don’t miss the white truffle menu.

For lunch, warm up with some tomato basil soup from Mezzaluna or earn your calories by skiing down Aspen Mountain and treating yourself to the Ajax Tavern double patty cheeseburger. Substitute your side of regular fries for truffle fries for the ultimate Ajax experience. I’m not much of a carnivore, but I can’t pass up an Ajax burger.

Other notable Aspen eateries include The Wild Fig (get the fish in a bag), Gisella, L’Hostaria and Ellina.

    Where to drink and dance

For the see-and-be-seen, have an après ski cocktail at The Little Nell. This is a must-do during ski season.

Ski Highlands and stop off at Cloud Nine for a fondu and dance party experience. Expect loud music, hot wine and champagne. Ski down at your own risk.

Reserve a table at Escobar for a full-on club experience. Enjoy a loungy scene infused with electronic and swing music. Dance the night away.

Enjoy dinner, drinks, dancing and serious people-watching with a long or short term membership at Aspen staple Caribou Club. Known by locals as “The Bou."

For a slightly more low key experience, hit the brand spanking new Irish Pub Finbarr’s. Our group ducked in here to avoid New Year's Eve mayhem and ended up dancing the night away. Cozy up on a couch by the fireplace.

Boogie down at Belly Up – Aspen’s live music venue. This calendar is chock-full of everything from from Jane’s Addiction to Lyle Lovett.

    Where to shop:

Pop into Pitkin County Dry Goods for everything from an array of contemporary designers like Tucker to a killer shearling and leather assortment.

Don’t miss the stellar selection of denim at Boogie’s. Head up the stairs for a '50s diner experience.

Rummage through a closet of treasures in vintage spot The Little Bird. My purchases have included everything from an Etro belt to dresses by YSL and Alaia. I’m on call for a red Chanel blazer. Ask for Carrie. Now open in Houston.

For the epitome of Aspen-style, hit the Ralph Lauren store. Pop in after Christmas for a killer sale. This year, I nabbed this perfectly poufy vest.

Choose from an amazing selection of Chloe, Roberto Cavalli and Bogner at Gorsuch LTD. Forget to bring sunscreen or shampoo? Pick from a full selection of Kiehl's products. A pair of Gorsuch foxy boots are on my list for next year.

The recently downsized Amen Wardy still hosts the chicest home décor. My hubby and I nabbed a set of amazing Venetian Mask napkin rings. Bring home their peanut butter filled pretzels to snack on.

For a chic selection of Alaia, among other interesting designers, hit Nuages boutique.

Walk down the street to hip boutique Max. I had to stop and drool over the selection of Rick Owens and this amazing croc embossed and colorful PS1.

New Texas museum shines spotlight on Tejano music history

Roger Hernandez serves as board president of the Totally Tejano Hall of Fame and Museum.

For a city that proudly calls itself the capital of Tejano music, San Antonio has long been missing a permanent place to honor the genre’s pioneers and preserve its history. That gap officially closed In December with the opening of the Totally Tejano Hall of Fame and Museum at 1414 Fredericksburg Rd.

The music couldn’t have found a better steward than its founder and board president. Roger Hernandez has had his finger on the pulse of Tejano music for decades. His company, En Caliente Productions, has provided a platform for countless performing artists and songwriters in Tejano, conjunto, and regional Mexican music since 1982.

Hernandez says his wife, who ran a shop at Market Square years ago, would often get questions from visitors about the location of a physical Tejano music museum, a thing that simply did not exist. In 2022, he banded together with friends, family, and other local Tejano music supporters to make the nonprofit Hall of Fame a reality.

“I decided I've been in the music scene for over 40 years, it's time to do a museum,” Hernandez recalls.

Hernandez says a brick-and-mortar Tejano music museum has long been needed to remember musical acts and other individuals who grew the genre across Texas and northern Mexico, especially those who are aging. Recently, the community lost famed Tejano music producer Manny Guerra and Abraham Quintanilla, the renowned Tejano singer/songwriter and father of the late superstar Selena Quintanilla-Perez. Both deaths occurred roughly one week after the Totally Tejano museum opened to the public.

“They're all dying. They're all getting older, and we need to acknowledge all these people,” Hernandez says.

The Totally Tejano Museum — named after Hernandez’s Totally Tejano Television Roku streaming — has 5,000 square feet of space packed with plaques, photos, promotional posters, musical instruments, and other memorabilia honoring the pioneers and stars of the beloved genre. Mannequins wear stage outfits from icons like Laura Canales and Flaco Jimenez, and a wall of photos remembers late greats. Totally Tejano Television plays legendary performances on a loop, bringing the exhibits to life.

Hernandez says the museum will soon welcome permanent and rotating exhibits, including traveling shows, a Hall of Fame section, and an area paying homage to Chicano music crossovers, such as the late Johnny Rodriguez, the South Texas singer-songwriter who blended country with Tex-Mex music. Plans call for the organization to hold its inaugural Hall of Fame induction in February 2026.

Eventually, a 2,000 square feet back room will be converted into additional display space and host industry gatherings, community symposiums, and record and video release parties. The museum also plans to add a gift and record shop and a music learning room where visitors can listen to early Tejano music and browse archival photos. Hernandez is already talking with local school districts about educational field trips.

Much like Tejano itself, the museum is a grassroots production. Hernandez and fellow board members have used their own money to rent, renovate, develop, and maintain the museum space. The board also leads the selection of the Hall of Fame honorees and curates the exhibits.

Hernandez has been heartened by the museum’s reception, both from media outlets and music fans around Texas and beyond.

“We had a radio station come in this morning from Houston to interview us,” he says. “People have come in from Lubbock, Texas. We have had people from Midland, Texas. We have another person who emailed us who’s coming in from New York. People are learning all about us.”

That includes many of the musicians who helped shape the genre. Johnny Hernandez, Sunny Ozuna, Elida Reyna, and Danny Martinez from Danny and The Tejanos are among the luminaries who have already graced the halls.

The Totally Tejano Hall of Fame and Museum is now open 10 am-6 pm, Tuesday-Sunday, and closed Monday. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. Fans can call 210-314-1310 for more information.
