The true arrogance
Texas fans should be ashamed of their booing ways: Reason for losses extendsinto the stands
University of Texas fans — rightfully regarded as some of the best fans in college football (and not just by themselves) — once again went low class Saturday, booing their Longhorns during another upset home loss.
This 28-21 Iowa State victory shouldn't just be recognized as biggest win in the history of the Cyclones' rather inglorious football program. It's also time to admit that one of the reasons UT is suddenly having so much trouble winning at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium is because of its increasingly fickle fans.
Think it's coincidence that this unsure, flawed Longhorns team played loose and free in last week's upset win at Nebraska, while seizing up like a beauty pageant contestant asked to solve a physics question when it returned home?
Then, you're probably one of the idiots who feels the need to boo a program that went 25-2 over the last two seasons.
Not every devoted Texas fans turns to jeers. But enough do that it became the overwhelming vibe of the stadium in both the Iowa State and UCLA losses. As the mistakes piled up and the Cyclones' lead built, you can bet that the Longhorn players were anticipating the boos too. No one plays their best looking over their shoulder.
Texas coach Mack Brown railed against the arrogance his players showed in falling behind 28-6 to Iowa State. But, the real arrogance is found in the stands.
Only the most delusional couldn't have anticipated that Garrett Gilbert was going to struggle mightily trying to fill the arm of Colt McCoy. That was obvious from that first uneven win over Rice at Reliant Stadium. To assume another Top 5 finish as a birthright shows just how insane things have gotten in Austin.
It wasn't all that long ago that vocal segments of UT fans tried to hook Brown right out of town. Vince Young needed to steal a national title to halt that bit of craziness. But with the Longhorns 4-3, the rumbling will likely return.
The Longhorns have won at least 12 games in three of the last six seasons and still it's not enough. UT fans are starting to make New York Yankees backers seem reasonable by comparison.
Brown is too much of a politician to ever say it publicly, but one of the problems with Texas can be found in the stands.
It's time for this fan base to grow up — and get real.
