Prepare for the Commonwealth
Jay-Z's team: Kentucky coach John Calipari reassures Houston that it will beoverrun with crazy Wildcat fans
Every since VCU and Butler crashed the Final Four, insuring that it would be the first Final Four ever without a single No. 1 or No. 2 seed in it, there have been understandable concerns that the field would limit the number of fans who descend on Houston.
Scalpers are complaining that ticket prices are lower than the stratospheric payoffs they expected, KTRK Ch. 13 reports that it found semifinals and championship game tickets going for as low as $250 in packages and searches on Yahoo! for "Final Four tickets" this week are down 42 percent compared to Final Four week last year.
Never fear, the Commonwealth is coming. That's Kentucky coach John Calipari's phrase for the hordes of Kentucky fans he expects to see in the Bayou City. In fact, Calipari is so convinced that Wildcat devotees are going to overrun Houston that he's taken to his personal website asking them to give his players some space.
"If we take care of our business, there will be plenty of time to get autographs and personal photos beginning next Tuesday," Calipari said on CoachCal.com. "We have the greatest fans in America and we want to reward them with our players’ undivided attention, focus and peak physical condition.
"You can scream at them, cheer for them in the open practice and take pictures from afar — but in order to make sure they — and our staff — doesn't get worn down by thousands and thousands of requests at the hotel and in public, I'm just asking that you'll give us all our space while we're in Houston. I mean no disrespect at all and I know you all understand that we take pride in being The Commonwealth's Team.
"But this is a business trip for these young men and our program. Let's take care of business first and then we can have some fun later."
"Thousands and thousands of requests at the hotel"? Is this Michael Jackson coming back to life at a Galleria hotel or just one of the best college basketball teams in the country?
OK, Calipari's never been above exaggerating to make a point. But he obviously expects a huge turnout from rabid Kentucky fans who haven't seen their team in a Final Four since 1998, an eternity in the Commonwealth. And after Jay-Z visited the Kentucky locker room following the Final Four-clinching win over North Carolina in Newark, N.J., perhaps anything is possible.
Sure the visit triggered an NBA investigation because Jay-Z is a part owner of the New Jersey Nets and his contact with the Wildcat players — several who could be NBA lottery picks — could be considered an unfair advantage. But in a Final Four with Butler, VCU and even fellow power conference team UConn. it's clear which team the celebrity power lies with. And we haven't even gotten to Wildcats "superfan" Ashley Judd — who will be written about in every Kentucky Final Four story whether she actually ever makes it to Houston or not (there is no confirmation that Judd plans to attend any of the Final Four games yet).
The Commonwealth will be here in giant numbers though. Calipari is sure of that.
