When will Ohio State go down? And other college basketball questions Joe Lunardicannot answer
Can you believe that we’re only about a month away from Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament, which, of course, concludes this year with the Final Four in Houston? Perhaps the lurking presence of bracketologist Joe Lunardi on ESPN should have given you a clue.
Luckily, Joe doesn’t get to decide who’s in. The teams will figure it out themselves on the court, starting with this weekend’s excellent slate of games. Here are some of the best.
GAME OF THE WEEKEND: Ohio State at Wisconsin (1 p.m. Saturday)
It’s been seven years since St. Joseph’s made it through the regular season undefeated, eventually losing in their conference tournament and then again in the Elite Eight. Ohio State has just seven games remaining on its regular season schedule, so it's closing in on that impressive feat.
Playing in Madison will be one of the last few tests of the unbeaten streak. On paper, the Badgers don’t seem to match up with the Buckeyes, and they lack the size to deal with Jared Sullinger and the athleticism to stay with OSU’s wings. (Who doesn’t?)
But Badgers coach Bo Ryan is near unbeatable at home, and he has a dynamic playmaker in Jordan Taylor who can put the team on his back.
CONFERENCE SHOWDOWN: Xavier at Duquesne (1 p.m. Sunday)
The Dukes were riding high until a surprising loss to St. Bonaventure this week put the first blemish on their Atlantic 10 record. They’re now tied with the Musketeers, who come off a resume-building win at Georgia.
Duquesne needs this game much more. It ranks 76th in the most recent RPI rankings, not what you consider worthy of an at-large contender. This one could come down to a matchup of the men handling the ball.
Tu Holloway shortened his name but increased his game in the offseason for Xavier, leading a potent backcourt, while T.J. McConnell has been a freshman revelation for the Dukes, a hometown player who has uplifted the entire team with his do-everything play.
BUBBLE BATTLE: St. John's at Cincinnati(11 a.m. Sunday)
Both teams would seem to be in good shape for an at-large bid, but they don’t want to watch that conference record slip so far that the committee has to think twice. The Johnnies have the far better resume, with impressive wins over Duke, Notre Dame, Georgetown and UConn.
But the Bearcats won the first meeting in New York, and sweeping the Storm would certainly help their cause. Cincy struggles to score at times, although Sean Kilpatrick has been carrying them lately off the bench. Bearcat big man Yancy Gates could take advantage of the Storm’s smallish frontline, but only if he can get out of Coach Mick Cronin’s doghouse. Senior-laden St. John’s has been riding the hot hand of guard Dwight Hardy.
UNDER THE RADAR: Southern Methodist at UTEP (8:05 p.m. Saturday)
Does anybody want to win Conference USA? Six teams are within one game of each other in the loss column. This Saturday night matchup between first-place UTEP and SMU, just a game back, could create some separation or clog things up even further.
The Mustangs played a horrendous non-conference schedule and started 1-3 in conference, but they’ve since caught fire with five straight wins. They’re led by double-double machine Papa Dia, who has blossomed in his senior season and is among the conference leaders in scoring, rebounding and blocks. The Miners have their own senior star in Randy Culpepper, who has upped just about all of his numbers from his stellar junior year.
