Three hot classical music chicks talk fashion and international fame
Moving through the designer aisles at Tootsies on Monday, the Ahn sisters, known to classical music fans as the Ahn Trio, could easily have been mistaken for any of the fashionable young women that typically populate this emporium of high style. But no.
These were three exceptional talents — outstanding musicians recognized the world over for their beauty as well as for their prodigious musical skills.
If you don't know the Korean-born, Julliard-educated women for their music, which they will be performing at Wortham Theater Center on Wednesday night, you might recognize them from the August issue of Glamour Magazine, the "jeans issue." Or you might recall that People Magazine named them three of the 50 most beautiful individuals in America. They've been photographed for Visionaire and GQ magazines and have appeared in ads for Anne Klein and The Gap.
The twins — Maria (cello) and Lucia (piano) — and their younger sister, Angella (violin) stopped in at Tootsies under the auspices of the Society for the Performing Arts for a reception and formal chat with CultureMap editor-in-chief Clifford Pugh and Tootsies' senior buyer Penne Weidig. After sampling a few of chef Philippe Schmit's taste temptations from his soon-to-open namesake eatery, the three took the stage for a lively Q&A in which they shared fashion and music insights.
While they are "changing the face of chamber music today," the Ahns are not exactly burning up the fashion world. They concede that fashion is interesting but as Maria said, "We're not quite sure if we're fashionable."
For this outing Maria, whom her sisters describe as the rock star, wore a Vivian Tan dress and stylized western boots by Marc Jacbos. Angella, classic and sexy according to her siblings, wore 7 For All Mankind jeans, a $10 shirt from Zara and a Betsy Johnson jacket. Lucia, the so-called Bohemian of the three, wore a white Tracy Reese dress, sexy white sandals and $10 feather earrings that she bought on the streets of Soho.
"We're not Lady Gaga," Maria said. "We don't have a stylist ... we're very low maintenance. Fashion is not our high priority." She confessed that she often wears the same dress for their concerts, a frock by Betsy Johnson.
In the music world on the other hand, the Ahns are at the top of their game, performing and recording the world over. "Our mission has been to make classical music not so scary to people," Angella said.
Thus, they have embraced contemporary composers including Pat Metheny and Kenji Bunch, whose works they will perform on Wednesday. And they have created the BraziliAHN Project in which they are premiering works by Brazilian composers. Their latest CD, Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac, continues their tradition of rocking the classical landscape.
As allaboutjazz.com says, "The trio builds bridges between diverse musical genres and transcends any preconceptions that exist in the classical music scene by embracing 21st Century classical music as well as utilizing elements of new age, jazz, pop, folk, minimalism, avant-garde, chill, lounge and hip-hop."
With the questions completed, these rock stars of the classical world headed back to the serving tables to savor a few more of chef Schmit's petite quiches, baby croque monsieurs topped with quail eggs and enough samplings to make a complete lunch.
