30th anniversary bash
Lindsay Lohan, Frida Kahlo, Marilyn and other "stars" drank the OJ at the OrangeShow gala
When Lindsay Lohan makes an entrance arm-in-arm with Gandhi, there's only one affair in Houston where such a wacky sight is par for the course: The Orange Show Gala.
The zany-costumed bacchanal Saturday night at the Crown Plaza Heritage Center licensed 500-plus guests to unleash their inner superstar or opt for black-tie threads. Alongside Lucille Ball, Howard Stern, freaky alien baby in a onesie, man in a tutu, Marilyn Monroe, Frida Kahlo, Steve Jobs and a mise-en-scène imbued with feathers and sequins, it was the almost-naked models air-brushed onsite that turned heads.
It didn't take long for the 30th anniversary fete of the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art to morph into a spirited social. Poring over the silent auction, curated by Helaine Lubetkin and Barbara Hinton, big spenders upped the ante for a James Surls bronze and steel sculpture and a John Alexander painting, exceeding bids of $20,000 and $10,000, respectively.
Both artists were instrumental in the preservation of Jeff McKissack's folk art environment. They were recognized as honorary chairs joining Ann and James Harithas, who originally introduced the Orange Show to the nonprofit's founder Marilyn Oshman.
The bidding was interrupted by the Hustler's Brass Band, a New Orleans-style second line crew that marched gala-goers through a giant mouth into an orange-studded dining room complete with a 12-foot faux birthday cake and tablescapes overflowing with Orange Show accoutrements.
Once bluesy tunes courtesy of Doctor John & The Lower 911 began, the raucous soiree moved swiftly to the dance floor.
