World's top Vatican expert boosts the University of St. Thomas Center for Faith& Culture
It's not often that you get to hear a pre-eminent expert on any subject much less one that is considered the world's top noggin when it comes to the Vatican. But that's just what guests attending the Faithful Citizenship Award Dinner and Lecture enjoyed Monday night when John Allen Jr., the National Catholic Reporter senior correspondent, was keynote speaker.
Allen, who is also senior Vatican analyst for CNN and author of six books, delivered a witty lecture titled "Faithful Citizenship in the 21st Century: Three Core Challenges for American Catholics."
The evening, sponsored by the University of St. Thomas Center for Faith and Culture, drew some 130 students, friends and supporters to the Cathedral Centre where more than $100,000 was raised. Proceeds support the mission and programs of the center, which include a recently-inaugurated Master of Arts degree in faith and culture, the only degree of its kind in the country.
Joe Tortorice Jr., founder and CEO of Jason's Deli, received the Faithful Citizen award on the evening chaired by Judy and Darby Seré.
Among those mingling on the Cathedral Centre rooftop terrace as the sun set behind Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart were Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Center for Faith and Culture director the Rev. Donald Nesti, Patty and Craig Biggio, Ginger and Jack Blanton, Jan Duncan, Debbie and Charlie Chambers, UST President Bob Ivany and Marianne, Raye White, Regina Rogers and Harris County Commissioner Steve Radack and Judge Sherry Radack.
