Powerhouse women (and a few good men) gather for Anti-Defamation League luncheon
The day after the nation celebrated the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, the Anti-Defamation League gathered more than 40 female leaders for a luncheon at Tony's where the subject was the work of ADL in fighting prejudice, bigotry and bullying.
Dr. Yvonne Cormier, Dr. Kelli Cohen Fein, Arvia Few, Sherry Levy and Yava Scott hosted the gathering that featured State Rep. Senfronia Thompsonas guest speaker. Thompson and State Sen. Rodney Ellis worked together to pass the Matthew Shepherd/James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act and for their efforts will be honored by ADL.
Ellis and Thompson will take bows as Houston Icons at the ADL centennial celebration, "Houston in Concert Against Hate," Nov. 14 at Jones Hall.
The coterie of women attending, invited for their leadership roles in the community, included Gaynell Drexler, Donna Vallone, Licia Green-Ellis, Cyndy Garza-Roberts, Nicole Gibson, Annette Duggan, Beverly Denver, Chree Boydstun, Lisa Cregan, Arvia Few, Judith Finkel, Carol Guess, Diana Hudson and Sonny Jiles.
