Panties and bras vie with puppies for attention in this Chicken Ranch fantasy
Howling hounds and yappy pomeranians took over the Hilton Americas-Houston ballroom Saturday night for the Citizens for Animal Protection "Best Little Dog House in Texas" benefit. The pooches had reason to bellow over this whacky Chicken Ranch fantasy complete with super-sized thrift shop undergarments hanging from the walls and decorative fences.
Add poop alerts to the colorful canine tableau.
Most everyone in the crowd of 235 embraced the Chicken Ranch theme (the infamous whorehouse shut down by late Channel 13 newsman Marvin Zindler). Would-be ladies of ill-repute wandered the floor in tutus and fishnet stockings. Feather boas were derigeuer on both women and dogs. The gents strutted their stuff in varied costuming ranging from cowboy couture to gentrified johns attire. Taking a step into the past, Jeff Shell and Edward Sanchez both channeled Zindler.
Of course, the dogs of all breeds, mixes and sizes dressed as well for the runway presentation.
The biggest dog in the room — Noell Myska's massive Leonberger named Chewbacca. (The males in this breed can reach as much as 170 pounds.)
The dashing duo of Brian Teichman and Paul-David Van Atta chaired the zany evening that had Van Atta taking on the party design by pining double-D cup brassieres and those of lesser sizes on the backdrop to the bar. The bras, panties and men's boxer shorts were scattered across the party landscape, gathered from a thrift shop by CAP event planner Hershey Grace, who had the only cat in the room. And that gentle fur ball was on a leash.
Taking bows were honoree Greg Miller; his mom Beverly Wren, co-chair; and Joanne King Herring, honorary chair.
Among supporters were Linda Schmuck and Todd Zucker, Bruce Padilla, Shelby Kibodeaux, Susan Krohn and Patrick Gehm, Barbara Van Postman, Mariah Pellicer, CAP executive director Cappy Munzer, Astrid and Gene Van Dyke and Marvin Zindler's son, Donnie Zindler.
