Houston Texan talks about his struggle with depression, raises more than$500,000 at benefit luncheon
Houston Texans vice chairman Philip Burguieres received two standing ovations at the Menninger Clinic "Breaking New Ground" luncheon on Thursday — first, as he approached the podium and second when he finished the story of his struggle, 15 years ago, with severe depression.
Burguieres was not only guest speaker at the sellout luncheon but also the honoree, recognized for his long-time board leadership with Menninger and for his commitment to having mental illness defined as a disease not unlike diabetes or heart disease.
Beth Robertson chaired the luncheon that hosted a sellout crowd (it was sold out two months in advance) and raised more than $500,000, both a reflection of the respect and affection so many hold for Burguieres. Menninger president and CEO Ian Aitkenannounced that proceeds will support the clinic's community-based mental health programs.
Applauding the record monies raised were Carolyn and Howard Tellepsen, Karen and John Huff, Vicky and Harris Pappas, Jana and Scotty Arnoldy, Cathy Brock, Penny and John Butler, Joan and Stanford Alexander, Mark Wallace and Franelle Rogers.
