United Way's top donors pony up a cool $14 million — out of their own pockets
How sweet it is for the United Way of Greater Houston — all those generous Houstonians who've signed on as members of the mega-donor Alexis de Tocqueville Society. These are the financially secure folks who part with a minimum each year of $10,000 personally — no corporate checks, thank you — with some contributing as much as $100,000 for United Way coffers.
That generosity was celebrated Monday night a the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston where several hundred of the nearly 800 members gathered for an appreciation dinner. De Tocqueville co-chairs Jim Postl and Alie Pruner applauded the society's growth — 141 new members — and its largesse. Within the next few weeks, total contributions from this tony group are expected to reach $14 million. Thanks in no small part goes to those super society members — Benefactors, who continue to contribute $100,000 up to $199,000, and Visionaries ,who contribute $200,000 or more, each year from their own pocketbooks.
Community campaign chair and past society co-chair Bobby Tudor extolled the work of the United Way and highlighted the importance of giving at such levels as de Tocqueville members do. Phoebe Tudor joined her husband in brief remarks praising the donors and emphasizing that giving to others is the basis of a truly happy life.
The generous contributors included Anna and Scott McLean, Jennifer and Chris Brown, Wendy and Jeff Hines, Stanford Alexander, Charles Duncan, Diana Hudson and Lee Kaplan, Judy and Wayne McConnell and Kathy and Marty Goossen.
