Three mayors, one Lt. Governor and $1.46 million in hand mean big success forGala on the Green
As magical as a fairytale, as elegant as a royal coronation and as green as the Emerald City of Oz, Saturday night's Gala on the Green transformed Discovery Green into a black-tie wonderland washed in broad swaths of verdant lighting.
Guests arrived at the downtown park site at the foot of the Brown Foundation Promenade, where the century-old live oaks were hung with crystal chandeliers and where patio heaters fought off the chill night air. Here, the glitterati schmoozed, sipped cocktails and sampled hors d'oeuvres while viewing the massive party tent that glowed green in the distance.
Gala chairs Bobby and Phoebe Tudor, she stunning in a white one-shouldered Marchesa gown, welcomed the contingent of notables that included Mayor Annise Parker, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, former Mayors Bill White and Bob Lanier and new Museum of Fine Arts, Houston director Gary Tinterow.
The propitious turnout, that included Nancy and Rich Kinder, Franci and Jim Crane, Laura and John Arnold, Fayez Sarofim, Soraya and Scott McClelland and so many more VIPs, guaranteed a financial success for the biennial gala. Emcee KPRC news anchor Dominique Sachse announced that the evening had raised $1.46 million for park programming.
Jackson & Co. provided the Parisian-inspired dinner while Party on the Moon delivered the irresistible tunes that had the dance floor packed until lights out. (It was something of a redux of Bobby Tudor's 50th birthday party, held in Hermann Park, when both Jackson & Co. and this rocking band from Atlanta made that night one to remember as well.)
This churning green machine included Discovery Green director Barry Mandel, HoustonFirst president Dawn Ullrich, KPRC Channel 2 GM Jerry Martin, Kathy Hubbard, Anne and Charles Duncan, Christopher Gardner, Bobbie and John Nau, Tricia Dewhurst, Dorothy and Mickey Ables, Melanie Gray and Mark Wawro, Cathy and Dr. Gary Brock and David Arpin and Alex Rodriguez.
