Sugar Land loses one of its best restaurants with Amici's closing
Whenever people harp about a lack of quality and local businesses — especially restaurants — in the suburbs, one of the exceptions I would always point to was Amici, Jeff Vallone and Bruce McMillian's testament to upscale, comfortable Italian food in Sugar Land.
But as of Tuesday, Amici has closed its doors for good.
"Friday and Saturday night were great. It was just Monday through Thursday that was quiet. Really quiet," Vallone says. "It's a tough economy."
Vallone also named the location and lack of surface parking as issues for the restaurant, which opened in 2006.
"I think having only valet was a problem," he said. "Tucked way back inside Town Square, I think it was a lot for people to deal with getting in and out at lunch. It's all about perception. Of course, hindsight is 20/20."
Vallone says he has no immediate plans for other venues in the area and will focus his efforts on Ciao Bello and Caffe Bello, which he co-owns with father Tony.
