A 100-foot-long lobster roll?! Big as Texas sandwich will be created — and eaten — in Houston
What's made out of 80 pounds of Maine lobster, eight gallons of mayo and 70 pounds of dough?
While this sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen, the big-as-Texas phallic creature that's set to take center stage at Maine-ly Sandwiches pledges to break the world record for the largest lobster roll in the world. The Houston-based restaurant plans to kill the previous 61-foot lobster roll record set in Portland, Maine — by a long shot.
"Everybody knows that everything is bigger in Texas," restaurateur Buddy Charity says in a video interview for the latest KHOU CultureMap Moment. "We are going for 100 feet."
A panel of celebrity judges will watch over the proceedings scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Once the size has been verified by officials, the lobster monster will serve as the main dish in an eating competition that pits judge against judge, including CultureMap contributor Marcy de Luna, who's on a search for the most appropriate eating pants for the challenge.
The event will also include music, raffles and bounce houses for the kids. Proceeds will benefit the Blue Cure Foundation.
