Cavity Fighter
Local dentist offers to pay cold, hard cash for your kids' Halloween candy stash
One Houston dentist has seen enough of the weight gain, tooth decay and cavity spike that follows the over-abundance of candy consumption each Halloween season.
Dr. Behzad Nazari of Antoine Dental will host a post-holiday Halloween Candy Buy Back. He invites patients and strangers alike to stop by his office and drop off their trick-or-treat spoils in exchange for cold, hard cash — at a rate of $1 per pound of candy.
With this situation, everyone wins: The kiddos get to collect the candy, then add money to their piggy banks. Parents bypass the bouncing-off-the-walls that inevitably follows Halloween sugar highs. The dentist promotes healthy hygiene.
To partake in the exchange, call (713) 278-2321 to schedule a drop-off appointment. Dr. Nazari's office will accept candy Tuesday through Saturday.
Maybe you agree with the doctor's mission and want to avoid purchasing expensive candy that may go straight into the garbage. Perhaps you'd rather not support a candy industry that forces children to work in hazardous conditions.
If that's the case, pass out fresh fruit (like apples or clementines), toys (temporary tattoos or Silly Bandz), craft supplies (crayons or erasers), or home-baked goods (only if you know the trick-or-treaters personally, of course).
