Houston's already been named the best burger city in America by Travel + Leisure, so it's no surprise that when Food + Wine magazine editor Kate Krader listed her five favorite burger destinations for CNN's Eatocracy, a Houston burger joint made the cut.
Houston's Hubcap Grill does basic burgers like no one else, but Krader singles out the stand for its unconventional offerings, including a waffle burger special (burger patty + waffle + syrup) and the sticky burger, a bacon cheeseburger with peanut butter. What, no reference to the Cheeto Burger?
Hubcap was listed alongside destinations including Las Vegas' Le Burger Brasserie, which boasts a version with Kobe beef, lobster, brie and 100-year aged balsamic vinegar for $777; Top Chef winner Richard Blais' unorthodox Flip Burger Boutique in Atlanta, which serves toppings like "Swiss cheese foam, seared foie gras [and] Coca-Cola ketchup;" and the donut burger at the New York State Fair in Syracuse.
(New Yorkers still think donut burgers are interesting and/or unusual. Hello, we've moved on to fried bubblegum.)
The list means that Hubcap Grill, which has earned local raves, now joins Branch Water Tavern as Houston restaurants that have gotten national attention for their burgers. What's your favorite Houston burger destination?
