Houston Restaurant Weeks outside the Loop: The best bets for a foodie in thesuburbs
Even if your summer vacation has come and gone, there's always time for some foodie tourism — especially when you can get out without paying a ton.
There's no better time to get out of your comfort zone — literally — than during Houston Restaurant Weeks, when you can explore prix fixe menus for only $35 ($20 if you can make the trip on your lunch hour).
For an escape past the Beltway, here are our favorite HRW picks outside the Loop:
Bistro Alex
With executive chef Roland Soza at the helm, Bistro Alex isn't just trying to live up to the Brennan family pedigree, it's taking refined Gulf coast cuisine in new directions, with all the fabulous trappings of Hotel Sorella and CityCentre to boot.
Aura
Frédéric Perrier makes French food so stylish and so consistent that if his restaurant was in CityCentre instead of Missouri City, he'd be the toast of the town.
Ray's Grill
Fans of the new Sorrel should try out the Fulshear restaurant by the same owner/chef team. It has the same focus on local food and small menus, just with a little bit of country mixed in.
Le Mistral
Chef/owner David Denis has been winning plaudits for his Provence-style French creations for years, and now he's got perhaps the loveliest dining room on the west side, plus a patio that feels like a trip to Nice.
Straits
Yes, Virginia, there is life outside the Loop. Located in the heart of CityCentre, there's a wicked bar and lounge scene here, plus some genuinely rare Malaysian specialties.
Merlion on 4th
You don't go to Seabrook expecting to stray from Gulf seafood classics, but Merlion's well-executed Thai food is a surprising exception. It's even got the Robb Walsh seal of approval.
