Breakfast Sandwiches Ahoy
New Heights-area restaurant serving up kolaches and epic breakfast sandwiches sets late summer opening
Houston has seen strong growth in the number of restaurants serving breakfast. From Golden Bagels & Coffee to Snooze and coffee shops with expansive food programs, the number of restaurants looking to lure diners in the morning has been increasing rapidly.
The folks behind King’s BierHaus and King’s BierGarten have noticed, too. Building on the strength of their popular kolache pop-ups, owners Hans and Philipp Sitter will soon open EggHaus Gourmet, a dedicated breakfast concept that will be located at 2042 E. TC Jester Blvd (next to the BierHaus).
“It’s my favorite meal of the day,” Philipp Sitter tells CultureMap about breakfast. “That’s how it started. I don’t feel like there are enough options.”
To develop the idea of a breakfast restaurant focused on quick-serve dishes made with high quality ingredients, Sitter traveled around the country collecting ideas. He found great kolaches in the Texas Hill Country and decadent, Instagrammable breakfast sandwiches at rapidly growing concepts like Shake Shack and California’s EggSlut. His wife Jeannette Gonzalez, a native of El Salvador, contributed ideas about breakfast tacos.
The focus on ingredients expresses itself in a number of ways. Both the white corn and hybrid wheat tortillas are made with non-GMO ingredients. Eggs are cage-free. Jams will be made in-house, and sausages are preservative-free. Beverage options include both coffee and an extensive selection of vegan-friendly matcha teas.
Specific dishes include the drunken chicken kolache (shredded chicken sautéed with peppers and onions, buffalo sauce), the Scramble sandwich (soft-scrambled eggs, smoked bacon, avocado, green onions, and cheddar), and the El Jefe breakfast taco (barbacoa, onions, cilantro, grilled jalapeno). Design details for the interior include graphic floral wallpaper with bright yellow sconces.
Look for all that and more when the restaurant opens at the end of August or the beginning of September.
