National mag selects two of Houston's most acclaimed restaurants as top wine destinations
Two of Houston's most acclaimed restaurants have received a little more national attention. While Underbelly and The Pass & Provisions are no strangers to the media spotlight, typically it's their chefs, James Beard Award winner Chris Shepherd at Underbelly and Seth Siegel-Gardner and Terrence Gallivan at The Pass & Provisions, who are the subjects of those articles, but not this week.
On Tuesday, Wine Enthusiast included both restaurants on its list of the 100 Best Wine Restaurants in America. They join laV in Austin and FT33 in Dallas as the only Texas establishments on the list.
Underbelly earned its place on the list for having a "very specific approach to its 200-label wine list: All must be family-owned and operated." The Montrose restaurant recently partnered with Houston hip hop legend Bun B to create a short comic book about how Shepherd became interested in wine.
Wine Enthusiastpraises The Pass & Provisions for being "stocked with lesser-known producers, regions and varieties, with helpful maps of wine regions. There’s a new emphasis on Old World-style domestic wines, especially Oregon Pinot Noir as well as vintage Madeira."
Consider visiting either restaurant during happy hour to get a sample of their wares. Underbelly's is Monday through Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight in its bar. Provisions' happy hour is available in the bar and patio from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
