French fries are America's No. 1 "vegetable", but one Houstonian is fighting back
French fries are the No. 1 vegetable consumed in the U.S. according to one food and health Houston-based advocate. Leafy greens and nutritionally dense produce are at the bottom of the list.
That's just not good enough for Recipe for Success founder Gracie Cavnar. Through her nonprofit, she's on a mission to teach children about where food comes from, empowering them to grow their own fruits and vegetables, and encouraging them to prepare delicious and healthy meals on their own. It's what Recipe for Success dubs seed-to-plate nutrition education.
"We have two goals," Cavnar says in the video. "One is to increase a child's consumption of fruits and vegetables. The other thing we want to do is to lower a child's resistance to trying these foods."
Though she wants to broaden the program nationally, her main activities will always have a primary focus locally in Houston, she says.
In this Hidden Houston video vignette, produced by Joy in Motion Productions, take a look at Cavnar's hands on solution to the growing obesity epidemic. Whether her blueprint starts by making green eggs and turkey with vegetables from their own gardens or pizza, there's a delicious answer cooking up in Recipe for Success' kitchens.
