Washington Avenue to get trendy tapas with late-night hours: Meet the newConvivio
Plans for a Mexico's Deli next to Uchi may be off, but owner Oscar Aguilar has other designs on making an inner Loop splash.
Aguilar, who also owns the overacheiving Decco Café in the Decorative Center Houston, is partnering with Marta Vina to open Convivio, a Spanish tapas restaurant moving into the Table 7 space near Washington Avenue on Durham. Aguilar and Vina, a native of Madrid, have brought in Daniel Saenz of Ouisie's Table and Post Oak Grill to serve as GM.
With an opening expected in late summer, Convivio will offer "contemporary tapas using authentic flavors and ingredients," plus a paella brunch on weekends that will include tapas, Spanish comfort food and sangrias to drink.
Also authentic to Spain will be the late night hours, with Convivio open for dinner only on weekdays and serving until at least 11 p.m. and as late as 2 a.m. from Thursday to Saturday. Studio Forma's Jay Clues is redesigning the 4,200-foot space with an open kitchen, 20-foot communal table, expanded patio seating and a raised private room/VIP area.
With the charming Hearsay gastropub on Clues' resume, we can expect a creative use of space and a "sleek, modern" style to meld the food and nightlife aspects. After all, "convivio" means to live together and is inherited from the Latin term for feast.
Are you looking forward to more tapas in town?
