Details of sexy sushi hotspot Katsuya's Houston locale revealed: Expect Texastwists at West Ave
CultureMap first reported on Jan. 5 that trendy Los Angeles sushi chain Katsuya was looking to make a splash in Houston and scoping out locations. Then a month ago, CultureMap confirmed that Katsuya had its eyes on West Ave.
Now Katsuya parent company SBE and local partners GEG Group are finally spilling on the extent of their plans to bring the celebrity hotspot's sophisticated sushi style to Houston.
Katsuya will be going in to West Ave in the spacious corner location across from Eddie V's, with an opening planned for the first quarter of 2012.
"It's going to be a similar feel to Los Angeles but with a Houston twist," says GEG Group CEO Ali Ansari. Ansari says the partnership is a year and a half in the making and came together in part because SBE chairman and CEO Sam Nazarian — who the Los Angeles Times dubbed "Los Angeles' King of the Night" — is a long-time friend.
"Every time I would go to LA my first stop would be at Katsuya. I love the food and the atmosphere," Ansari says. "I'm extremely excited to be bringing it here, it's an amazing brand."
Katsuya Houston, like the other locations, will have a dramatic interior by Philippe Starck, with a separate Dragon Bar and Lounge with a "hipper, more exciting" nightlife vibe. The menu will be designed by master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi, who will be adding specific menu items for Houston.
Houston is the focus for Ansari and his partner Charlie Chanaratsopon, but the duo say they've secured the rights to Katsuya throughout Texas and eventually plan to expand to Dallas and Austin.
