Now that's amore: $5,000 tip for a D'Amico's waiter comes with an inspirationalbackstory
Twenty percent of a $27 lunch bill is just over $5, but one couple dining at D'Amico's Italian Market Cafe over the weekend added a bit more — an extra $4,995, to be exact.
Greg Rubar has worked at D'Amico's in Rice Village for 16 years, often waiting on a married couple who are regulars at the restaurant.
The guests (who prefer to remain anonymous) are familiar enough with to restaurant to know that Rubar lost his car in severe weather several weeks ago, and has been taking cabs and borrowing the D'Amico catering truck in order to get to work. After finishing their lunch of soup and wine on Saturday, the couple handed Rubar an envelope holding $5,000 in cash with their bill and told him to "go buy a car."
Rubar, who has a wife and child, is reported to be in the process of doing just that.
The D'Amico's tip eclipses even the $3,000 left on a staggering $12,000 bill at Killen's Steakhouse earlier this month.
