Houston restaurants dominate region's best list: Oxheart beats Austin's best easily
Look out, Austin. Two Houston restaurants — nay, galleries where food is on a pedestal and ingredients are meticulously placed solely for consumption — have earned top spots on Opinionated About Dining’s Top 25 restaurants in the Southwest/Rockies region for 2013.
No big surprise here, ranking third is Houston’s Oxheart. Chef Justin Yu has received tons of national attention since this restaurant opened in an unassuming spot in North Downtown. What’s not to love? Yu is known for fresh and diverse ingredients grown in Texas and used in-season to create dishes that have been like Kryptonite to picky reviewers and foodies alike.
The Pass and Provisions takes home the No. 5 spot — and since it’s technically two restaurants in one, can we just say Houston has three glorious spots on the Top 5 list?
Chefs Terrence Gallivan and Seth Siegel-Gardner’s debuted their two-part eatery back in 2012. Besides changing up the restaurant game, it has since been described as an “exciting place to eat” by Opinionated About Dining and mentioned in Texas Monthly's 2013 list of Best New Restaurants. Part one of the restaurant, Provisions, features a more casual menu, serving pizzas, pasta and various entrees. More exclusive, its second half The Pass surprises with technically diverse dishes like the unconventional Ham & Eggs, which features pale colored pork cracklings served with caviar service.
Taking the No. 1 spot in the region is Guy Savoy in Las Vegas followed by Frasca Food & Wine of Boulder, Colo. Austin's Uchi finished fourth.
