It's throwdown season: Your quick guide to the top foodie events
Houston chefs are known for being ultra-supportive of each other — but that doesn't stop them from indulging now and then in a little friendly competition. That's good for foodies, who can taste bites from some of the best restaurants in town while picking winners and supporting charitable causes.
Are you ready to throwdown?
Join Young Texans Against Cancer Thursday night for the 2nd Annual Kiss My Grits Gulf Coast Throwdown. The lineup of top chefs features Samba Grille's David Guerrero, Michael Pellegrino of Max's Wine Dive, Uchi’s Philip Speer and Beaver's Jonathan Jones.
It all takes place at The Capitol at St. Germain from 7 to 10 p.m. with live entertainment by Skyrocket starting at 8 p.m. To purchase tickets, click here.
Proceeds benefit the Passport for the Cure program at Texas Children's Cancer Center, melanoma awareness in pediatric cancer at MD Anderson Cancer Center and T-cell therapy research in Melanoma Cancer at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Looking for a throwdown that's a little meatier? Kata Robata presents the First Annual Suckling Pig Throwdown on April 15, from 5 to 9 p.m.
The list of 13 participating chefs includes Gabriel Medina of Kata Robata, Mike Potowski of Benjy's on Washington, Revival Market's Ryan Pera, Seth Siegel-Gardner and Terrence Gallivan of the forthcoming The Pass and Provision and Ryan Hildebrand of Triniti. $15 of each ticket sold will benefit Recipe for Success, with tickets available now for pre-purchase.
And don't forget CultureMap is hosting its first-ever chef competition on Monday night with Last Chef Standing: Cast your vote for your favorite restaurant, purchase tickets (proceeds benefit Houston Public Media and the Houston Food Bank) and meet us at Hotel ZaZa for fare and paired drinks from 17 restaurants including The Grove, Samba Grille, Blu Lounge & Restaurant, Straits, Mockingbird Bistro, Quattro, Liberty Kitchen, Gigi's Asian Bistro and many more
Last but not least, from our littlest (future) chefs/entrepreneurs we're looking for some tasty lemonade recipes as they compete in Lemonade Day's Best Tasting Contest on April 28 at CityCentre. The contest heats up at 8 a.m. as more than 50 kids set up their stands and serve up some cool libations in the hopes of being named best-tasting, healthiest or most unique lemonade.
