Chef-beloved Thai restaurant shutters as owners plan next move, but grocery store lives on
Fans of Asia Market, take note. The Heights-area restaurant and grocery store known for serving high-quality, authentic Thai cuisine announced Saturday morning that it will cease restaurant operations in its current location on Sunday.
The Thai grocery store component will re-open Wednesday with a new owner, which will leave Asia Market owners Lawrence and Noi Allen free to work on opening Asia Market's new, dedicated restaurant two miles east of the current location on the other side of I-45 at 4822 Fulton St. They currently expect to open the new location at the end of June.
"Sorry for leaving all our fans without us, but once we return all will see it was worth the wait," the email promises. "Regular updates on the progress will be posted at www.asiamarkethouston.com. Thanks to HOUSTON for supporting us!"
Since the Allens took control of Asia Market in 2008, it has become a favorite place for Houston chefs like Chris Shepherd to eat and shop. In an interview with Serious Eats, Shepherd praises the restaurant for its authentic Thai flavors as demonstrated in dishes like the signature papaya salad.
