No fish tale: Houston's James Beard finalist out to sea on big day
Mar 22, 2010 | 11:57 am
After a spectacular showing in the semifinals, there were many Houston chefs paying attention to the announcement of the 2010 James Beard Awards finalists Monday morning from Commander's Palace in New Orleans.
But the only Houston chef who had his name called — Bryan Caswell, a finalist in the Best Chef-Southwest category for his signature restaurant, Reef — wasn't.
Caswell might be the last to hear his good news. He is fishing in the Gulf, according to business partner Bill Floyd, and couldn't be reached by phone. "I've left him like twenty messages," Floyd said. "He has no idea!"
One other Houstonian also received a nod — the Houston Press's Robb Walsh, in the category of Multimedia Food Feature.
Congrats to both finalists!
