Closing date revealed for iconic bar elbowed out by St. John's School expansion
As CultureMap first reported earlier this year, Blanco's Bar & Grill is on its last legs. The St. John's School's purchase of the land where the longtime honky-tonk institution sits signaled its end.
Well now there's something of an unofficial closing date.
The low key River Oaks-area joint will close by November, a source close to the ownership tells Swamplot.
Late last year, St. John's purchased the 13-acre tract of property bound by Buffalo Speedway and West Alabama Street, part of which Blanco's has called home for 30 years, to expand its campus. (CultureMap was first to report the purchase on Jan. 8.)
But Swamplot's source claims the shuttering doesn't necessarily mean the end for the beloved bar — it's scouting for a new location "somewhere in the area."
Inquiries to St. John's about a specific timeline for developing the property were not immediately returned, but the school leadership initially expected the strategic planning process to last "between 12 and 18 months."
Don't miss Marene Gustin's column from Jan. 21 lamenting the impending bulldozing of Blanco's.
