Lisa Fain has been a New York resident for years, but her bestselling cookbook, The Homesick Texan, shows her Houston roots are still strong.
Now her book has been nominated for an International Association of Culinary Professionals award for Best American Cookbook. The nomination puts Fain in the ranks of top chefs including John Besh (who won the category in 2010), Marcus Samuelsson, and last year's winners Matt and Ted Lee. That's impressive.
(In a moment of perfect Texan serendipity, Fain tweeted on Thursday that she found out about her nomination while having lunch at El Real Tex-Mex.)
Fain wouldn't be the first to win with Texas recipes — in 2008, The Pastry Queen Christmas: Big-hearted Holiday Entertaining, Texas Style by Rebecca Rather and Alison Oresman took home the award — but it still feels like a big moment in legitimizing Texan cuisine.
