Who needs Gelato with Hank's?
Houston still has the best old-fashioned ice cream
There’s something about Hank’s Ice Cream, tucked in an unassuming strip center near Reliant, that makes you feel like a kid again.
Maybe it’s the walls covered with signed headshots by television, music and sports stars, including Beyoncé and the lesser members of Destiny's Child.
Maybe it’s seeing Hank behind the counter, slightly grizzled but always friendly and inviting, still serving up his award-winning ice cream after more than 20 years.
Mostly, I think, it’s the ice cream, which is simply yummy. Though Hank has over 100 flavors in his recipe list, a typical day will have about 12, with lots of old favorites and a few curveballs (banana pudding, orange chocolate chip and cinnamon are popular choices).
The ice cream is rich and creamy — there's nothing approaching low-fat here — and the waffle cones are equally tasty. What else can you want? It’s a classic that’s still served up right.
