Guy food: What to eat while watching the Super Bowl
So the Man has invited some guys over to watch Super Bowl XLIV on the giant flat screen.
Plenty of beer? Check. Saints and Colts team jerseys? Check. Chips and dips? Check and check.
But that’s hardly substantial food for big, beefy guys. At least not if you don’t want your living room trashed or have to pour half the guests into cabs after the big game.
So what to feed these burly boys?
How about Molina’s Enchiladas de Tejas (cheese enchiladas with chili con carne)? There’s nothing like a little cheesy Tex-Mex to sop up the beer and this dish was recently named one of the eight greatest guy foods in America by none other than Men’s Health magazine. I’m not sure how healthy it is, but Ricardo Molina will certainly be serving them at his Super Bowl party.
“They hold very well,” he says. “And we’ll have charro beans, chips and queso, because I love that and so do Amy and my little girls.” Plus tacos, guacamole, salsa and “plenty of cold drinks.” If you didn’t get an invite to his house, you can always get some to go at Molina’s Cantina.
If not Tex-Mex, you can always go with sandwiches: really, really big sandwiches.
“What screams Super Bowl more than sandwiches?” asks Ziggy Gruber. “Nothing! And we at Kenny & Ziggy’s are sandwich central, lemme tell ya!"
“What I like to do for Super Bowl is to make hero sandwiches,” says the big, smiling Gruber. But not just any sandwiches. “Heroes like you don’t normally see in Houston, but like what you’d find in New York. I am talking six- to eight-feet long, with 2.5 pounds of meat per foot!"
Okay, now that’s a sandwich. And he piles them with everything from corned beef, pastrami, roast beef, turkey, salami and even sliced mother-in-law, “otherwise known as tongue,” with some potato salad and coleslaw thrown in.
“You have to open your mouth really big. That will get you in the Super Bowl mood!”
So pick up some great guy grub from your favorite eateries for the bowl game, order a pizza – the No. 2 fave Super Bowl food according to ask.com – or spend your time in the kitchen whipping up a little gourmet surprise for the guys. Maybe some NOLA gumbo and steamed crawdads for the Saints fans or, well, what the heck do people in Indianapolis eat anyway?
Never mind, you can always just punt and go with the classic homemade stuff of our college days.
“Velveeta cheese with Rotel and Frito chips, of course,” says Dan Pederson of the city’s parks department. “Old school classic game food!”
Whatever you’re serving, just don’t forget the beer.
Lots of beer.
