Tony Mandola's stays open with a post-Christmas restaurant miracle

Tony Mandola's will only be closing for three days after a "miracle" temporaryspot opened up.
The closing party at Tony Mandola's Gulf Coast Kitchen on Saturday night should still be a blast — but now it should be a little more jubilant and a little less bittersweet.
After more than two decades serving up a Texas-Cajun cuisine with an Italian twist in River Oaks Shopping Center, Mandola broke ground on a new wholly-owned space on Waugh at West Gray in 2010. The plan was to open the new space in January with minimal lag time after his lease expired at the end of the year.
But plans for a smooth transition were derailed when a construction delay meant the new space wouldn't be ready before March.
Rather than leave longtime employees without an income for several weeks, the Mandolas approached property rep Greg Lewis and owner Bob Schulz about a newly vacant space on Westheimer where Rickshaw and more recently Fins Seafood & Sushi had been located, hoping to work out a rare short-term deal.
“We walked into the meeting with Bob thinking there was no way anybody would seriously consider this proposal,” says Mandola, “and the very first thing out of Bob’s mouth was ‘Let’s see how we can make this work.’ ”
“The truth of the matter is that there are very few people I would have done this kind of thing for, but my wife and I are huge fans of Tony Mandola’s," says Schultz, who also owns The Continental Club. "And I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for a family like the Mandolas to think about the prospect of their longtime, loyal employees losing their livelihood .... Plus we’re not-so-secretly hoping they might stay.”
Instead of a three-month closure, Tony Mandola's Gulf Coast Kitchen will have only three days of down time for the move and will reopen at 2810 Westheimer on Jan. 12 (after closing Saturday night at its current location). The spot on Westheimer will be known temporarily as Tony Mandola's Miracle Location.
Mandola says they will have to exclude a few items from the menu due to kitchen limitations, but most of the customer favorites will be there.
