Modern home on historic Texas ranch hits market for $3.3 million

    Holly Beretto
    Jan 14, 2025 | 5:31 pm

Walk in the footsteps of Texas history at 2740 Flewellen Road. Located 10 miles from Brenham, Rocking C Ranch, also known as Forever View Ranch, sits on nearly 61 expansive acres in Washington County. The ranch is for sale for $3.35 million and is represented by Bryan Beene of Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty.

First, a bit of history: Rocking C has ties to “The Old 300,” dating to the years when Texas was first part of Spain's territory in the New World and then part of the Mexican empire when it gained indepdence in 1821. Connecticut native and entrepreneur Moses Austin received a permit from the Spanish colonial government to settle 300 families in the bottom lands of Texas' Brazos, Colorado, and San Bernard rivers. Upon his death, his son, Stephen F. Austin, shepherded those families to Texas from 1824 through 1827. Rocking C Ranch is a part of that first grant, and holds the distinction of being homesteaded in 1831 by a woman, Mary Ann Kennedy (Early) Pankey, thought to be the first female property owner of The Old 300.

After traveling from Missouri to Kentucky, Mary Ann Kennedy (Early) Pankey ultimately settled on Jackson’s Creek in what is now Washington County. When her husband Michael Early died in 1827, she received a grant of 4,400 acres in 1831. She’d hold that land through the Texas Revolution and the Republic, then on into 1845 when Texas entered the union as the 28th state.

Today, the ranch offers the conveniences of modern living, with its custom home featuring four bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths. Set far from the main road, the beautifully appointed, almost 5,700-square-foot home features rustic reclaimed wood and limestone accents alongside a wealth of high-tech and energy-efficient amenities.

The first floor owner's suite has its own sitting area with a heavenly spa bathroom. Upstairs, the future owner will find three secondary bedrooms and baths, along with an executive office and a game room with a balcony.

Incredible views abound from every room in the house. Imagine sitting in the formal living room, with its rustic reclaimed wood and limestone accents, and looking out across the pool to the open expanse beyond. Both the formal dining room and the state-of-the-art kitchen offer plenty of room for entertaining family and friends.

The saltwater pool and spa are surrounded by a covered patio, pergola, and fire pit. The entire outdoor oasis is on Rocking C Ranch’s southwestern exposure, offering exceptional sunlight and dazzling sunset views.

For an affulent family seeking a retreat from city life that isn't too far from Houston, Rocking C Ranch is the answer. This is an expanse with a storied history that's ready to help new owners write its future.

Galveston billionaires' massive Hill Country ranch may become a state park

Silver Lake Ranch is currently held by the Moody family.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department staffers say they want to buy ranch land in the Hill Country and turn it into a state park.

They're working to acquire the 54,000-acre Silver Lake Ranch, which is located around 150 miles west of San Antonio, between Rocksprings and Uvalde in Kinney and Edwards counties.

The Hill Country ranch features diverse terrain, wildlife, and a spring-fed lake. It’s currently owned by the Moody family from Galveston.

According to the nonprofit coalition Environment Texas, the ranch could be the first land purchase made with the $1 billion Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, which was created by the Legislature and approved by voters in 2023. The Centennial fund has recently inspired a boom in new parks, which have recently been purchased with other appropriations and would be developed using the fund.

“This is a milestone for all Texans and the wildlife who share our great state with us,” Environment Texas Executive Director Luke Metzger said. “The purchase of Silver Lake Ranch marks the first major step in fulfilling the promise of the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, ensuring Texans have more parks to explore and more natural treasures preserved for future generations.”

The fund provides dedicated, long-term financing for acquiring and developing new state parks.

“Expanding public access to Texas’ natural beauty is one of the most meaningful investments we can make for future generations,” said State Sen. Tan Parker, one of the authors of the original bill. “As our state grows, more families need places to hike, fish, camp and experience the wonder of the outdoors. Texas belongs to the people, and it is our responsibility to safeguard the lands that define our heritage while creating opportunities for new memories – ensuring that future generations can enjoy the freedom and beauty of our great outdoors for decades to come.”
